I just don’t get it. This weekend it was cold as giraffe pussy and all it did was push the birds out. Numbers were slim but we still shot limits of all ringnecks with a couple teal. Fast forward to today when it’s way warmer and we shot limits of nothing but greys, cans, and pins and ducks were plentiful. Does anyone else notice that nowadays these late season cold fronts do nothing but push the birds we already have down here out?

You mean there are a few ducks around now as compared to none (zero) in the last few years?

It is easier to figure out a woman than figuring out the mind of a duck.

I think by the time you get to this point in the season the ducks are already either down or where they want to be. It'll take a major winter weather event to get them all moving. The ice storm last February showed that. My place was covered up the day before it hit. The ones here on a mild winter will move with a front then come back. It might take them a few days to remember where they were but they are south somewhere. Overall we are only 5 weeks from them migrating back north.

Just got back from Oklahoma. It was below freezing every day and everything was locked up. Yes, we shot birds but not near the amount of Mallards we thought we would shoot. Funny thing is on all the locked up ponds that were holding birds previously, the ducks that were there before just ended up standing around on the ice. From what we could tell, they were feeding in cut corn fields. So with a source food source that wasn't covered in snow, they just kind of weathered the storm and didn't really leave.

Honestly, we were hearing reports that the Mallards are still in Kansas.

Always thought it was “high as giraffe pussy”. Guess it could be cold too.

Last weekend our field was frozen. The one just south of ours was not. Shots would get them up, but after circling a bit, then went right back down in that field. It was a bunch too.

Just cause it’s cold down here doesn’t mean it was cold enough up north to push birds down

It's cold as shite in NELA today. I would say our birds pushed down there but we didn't have any.

The days I got to hunt this year were like 85 degrees and teal, greys, sprigs, spoonies, and mallards were all flying around. Granted the mallards weren't decoying at all.

I learned long ago that you can never ever predict where and when the big ducks are going to be. Few years back we made a hole in ice in a frozen pond and didn't see nothing for a while and I was talking to my buddy then from over our heads zooming in were like 40 ducks of a very weird assortment (dos gris, blackjacks, woodies, spoonies, and a few grays) swarmed in the broken ice hole. We got what we could, then no more ducks fell for it for another hour or so and we left. Just goes to show the days you think are going to be perfect sometimes aren't.

NE LA seems to do much better on a warm up South wind day. We have killed them on the actual front day when it pushes through. It is the post front day or 2 after that sucks for the most part.

These days CenLa is about the same it seems in many places. Or just stale birds staying the whole time.
