Interesting take. Louisianians (I'm assuming this was in Louisiana) normally don't get the chance to hunt when it's snowing like it was, but many of the nation's other duck hunters are accustomed to operating in these conditions.

I’ve heard of at least two reports of duck hunters out in this snowstorm having to be rescued.
So because of these hunters, people were pulled out of their home, away from their families in order to rescue these idiots who thought it was a good idea to go duck hunting in this weather.
There should be a substantial fee for the hunters to pay, in order to discourage this. You’re putting other people’s lives at risk.
heck we used a walkie talkie to hail a truck driver to call the coasties to come fetch us(we were hopelessly tangled in a gill net in lake borgne off chef pass.

Every person who buys a Colorado hunting liscense pays a small amount into search and rescue. And they have a great team for that.

From what I have read, it was engine failure. That can happen to anyone at anytime. The conditions just happened to be bad at the time.
You get a flat tire in the same situation, are we giving you shite
If you call for help?
I give the hunters credit for having the balls to call for help and not dying.
I bet the people who rescued them had a great moment knowing they saved someone.

Went duck hunting in the snow where we had to break ice for the decoys countless times in Illinois on the Kankakee River and Illinois River sloughs in the Sanganois conservation area when I lived there in the late 90s.
What’s the difference between here and there?
Never got into trouble up there.
Did have a break down in Calumet cut, one morning on the way out to the wax in below freezing temps, but a fellow hunter towed us in. Have been on the other side of that coin, towing in other boaters before as well.
A breakdown or other emergency can happen anywhere/ any time and sheriff / WLF - that’s their job to respond to those scenarios.
What we have to all be pussies just because we live in the south?
GFY.

Glad they got to earn their pay for a day, nice change of pace. Little more interesting than sitting at a boat launch and harassing hunters about a "signed" duck stamp.

Going duck hunting in this weather is not as dangerous as driving a vehicle on a random Tuesday. Most likely if there were an ambulance involved in the rescue they are being charged for that service.

And think of this as payment v/s being fined. If you get stuck, you need to be prepared to pay someone to come and get you. Or, don't get yourself in a situation that you can't get YOURSELF out of during declared emergency weather conditions. If you do, then you need to be prepared to pay someone to come save you if you can't save yourself.

I wouldn't want to be near anyone from south LA on the highway towing a boat in icy conditions. But once they're on the water, what's so much more dangerous about going out in the snow compared to just a regular cold and windy day that hunters otherwise go out in after a cold front passes? I doubt these guys were crossing big open bodies of water and none of them had issues because they hit something while running because of low visibility or ran aground and got stuck from low water.

I guess after the next hurricane, the national guard should start collecting the names and addresses of everyone who goes to one of those water and MRE distribution sites so the government can send those people a bill for emergency food and water since they didn't heed evacuation warnings.

The one dude that ran out of gas going to the wax should be fined, thats about as dumb as it gets,

I guess this is something that people in their profession just NEVER thought would happen.
It's like joining the National Guard or Army Reserves and think you'll never deploy.

Have there been any reports as to whether there was good duck hunting during the cold spell? When I lived in Louisiana we mopped up on ducks when it was icy cold and miserable.
