Looking for a dog for next season. Not real interested in a puppy would rather a started or finished dog. Are there any trainers in the area sell dogs like this?

Looking to spend about 4k? That is a very low price for a good started, working dog.

Like I said, 4K is just for a started dog at most.
Dam shame my daughter and SIL only hunted their dog 4 time this pass season. They have well over 3K in just his training.

4k to 6.5k is about what I expect to spend. When you think about it a good puppy is going to cost $800-$2000. Training from what I have looked into is about $500 per month. It takes 4-6 months for started dog then another 3-5 to finish. I do not have the time to train a dog at this stage of my life. That puts the dog in that price range. I get to see the dog work and have a much better idea of what the dog can do. This is much better than hoping the expensive puppy works out.

Retriever training forum has a started dog section. Yes, for a intermediate dog, you are looking north of $4k+.
Honestly, you can get some value if you buy correctly.

I've got a few pups left if you change your mind.
I find training them myself makes the field experience all the more gratifying.
For 4K you can watch a lot of dog training videos

There’s a guy in Geismar selling one right now. I saw it on fb.

You are 100% correct.
Several years ago, a friend wanted a high caliber dog but didn’t have the time or ground to do it all himself. I want to say he ended up paying $8k for the dog. The dog was a FT washout but had sailed through his first few MH test. Sweet dog but an absolute Machine in the field. Considering he was on a pro’s trailer for a few years, countless live birds, etc, the purchase price was a fraction of the total bill.

You’re doing this the right way. Puppy is still a crap shoot. You know what you’re getting with started or finished dog.

Just remember when buying a started/finsihed dog, you will stilll have to put some significant time in. It takes some time to build a bond and trust, as well as having them adapt to the way you hunt.

It's amazing how good a FT wash out can be......

A buddy has a chocolate British lab female for $4000. She's got her master hunter or whatever.

I will make a deal with you. Pay me 2 grand a season for the next 2 seasons and I will fetch your ducks for you. You won't have to feed me in the off season.

I know of a 1.5yr old chessie male for sale. Nice sweet dog, running senior hunt tests. Last I heard he was 4k. May be ~5k since hes got more training in him.

I was going to buy a Started dog but decided to get a puppy and train myself when I saw price tags like this. Yes, there were some times I wondered why I went this route when she was acting full blown knucklehead but she is running Finished in HRC now and should have her HRC title this year if I can get away from work enough to run her in some hunt tests. Plus she is a damn machine in the field.

when we lost our chessie to DM and then later when we lost grizz... we had a lot of offers for started or FT washouts... for free or pretty close to it..... but... I have always enjoyed working with the dawgs and watching them develop.

It's ok once they are a finished product. My problem is time (or lack of it). With work, family, and other shite I didn't really want to go through the process again with training a dog. However, I really didn't want to drop $3K-$4K at one time either so I just dropped $800 and prepared for 2 years of hell.
