Anyone have a solution for dog allergies? My GWP is scratching the hair off of his ears and chest from seasonal allergies. He’s on Apoquel which is helping but I would prefer not to keep him on that permanently. Looking for a more natural solution. Already giving him fish oil daily and feeding him Victor salmon and sweet potato dog food.

I'm using apoquel too, and also about 90mg of another allergy med, was recommended by my vet. Have you tried some of the OTC allergy meds?

Nothing OTC. Any suggestions ofOTC’s that help? I’ve read colostrum could help, I’m gonna ask the vet about it next time I go refill the apoquel.

MY lab gets a shot once every two months or so. It’s basically apoquel it doesn’t have an immunosuppressant effect, is cheaper, and obviously not a daily thing. It’s about 100 bucks every shot (every two months) for my 60 pound lab. Not cheap, but better than what the pill costs.

Do you know the name of the shot? That sounds cheaper and better than the daily apoquel. While I don’t like paying $77 a month for Apoquel if it’s best for him I’ll do it but I would rather another option. I’m considering a holistic vet I was told about in Metairie. I’m mostly concerned with the long term affect of Apoquel on him. The immunosuppressant effect of it concerns me.

I gave my boxer shots at one point.

I gave up and tried like every freaking food on the market.

Merrick cleared up her issues and Petco started selling taste of the wild. She's been good ever since getting her food straight.

Here are two links about it. The first is an article written about it containing effectiveness rates, costs, ect. I assume a non-biased source. Second appears to be the name brand makers website.

$100 every shot was a rounded up too. It's really like 88 or something like that at my vet. The first shot only lasted for about 3 weeks, but since then my dog gets about 7-8 weeks before I see the itching return.

My dogs allergies were not food related. Mine was diagnosed with atopy, which I guess is basically allergies on steroids, and often times the allergies are triggered by things you can't avoid like common household dust or polling in the air.

Just what the vet told me, and this shot is was a godsend after about 2 months of weekly visits and steroids trying to figure out what the allergy was after first ruling out mange (we adopted).

Benadryl. 1 tablet per 15 lbs. of body weight.

Also, take a look at the ingredients in his food. Could be part of the problem.

My dogs do incredibly well on Muenster Milling (ordered directly from manufacturer).

We just started Merrick too. That with shot instead of Apoquel and we’ve noticed quite a difference.

My golden had a really bad bout with after a pretty serious hunting accident/surgery. I didn't know if she picked something up during her recovery at the vet or if she just randomly developed an allergy with age. She was scratching hair off of her face to the point that she was bleeding.

I couldn't get her to shake it and tried all kinds of stuff. I started giving her shots of depo-medrol and they've been working great. It's about $60 from my vet. She gets them as needed, which so far has been about once every two-three months. I can tell whenever she needs one.

Where are you located? You know there are veterinary dermatologists (LSU has some) - most of what they do is allergy testing and allergy shots just like in people. If you can get the dog desensitized via allergy shots (they teach you to do them at home) you can eventually discontinue the Apoquel.

Natural solution - considering allergy shots are just purified, tiny amounts of the environmental allergens that cause their problem I'd say it's pretty natural.

My lab/golden starts itching/scratching this time of year, every year. I just started noticing him doing it again the past couple weeks. Always lasts through the hot months. Would love to help the little guy out, but Idk about $100 every two months either...

My bloodhound had bad allergies in late spring/early summer every year. regular baths with shampoo that has oatmeal seemed to help. My sister is a vet and she had him on a weekly pill but I cannot remember the name off the top of my head. Also there was a cream that I used in the areas he scratched at... NuStock. That stuff was awesome... he had scratched all the hair off in several areas and that stuff stopped the itching and dry skin and regrew hair in a couple of applications. I would highly recommend it.

Cytopoint shot is what my Boxer got in October & again in April
It's a little over 100.00 at my vet but it seems to clear it up
I have tried generic Zyrtec & Claritin daily & didn't see where it helped

FOr my dog it was more than just itching. It was so bad it caused bacterial infection, hair loss, etc. the $100 every 2 months or so has him looking healthy with a beautiful coat and no itching. I really don’t have a choice, and it works great.

And it’s cytopoint my dog gets too

Oh ok. Yea, mine hasn't really ever progressed past scratching. HE has had some hot spots before, where the hair starts to go away, but they don't last long.

Yea it was so bad we treated for sarcoptoc mange at first, but when it didn’t get better absent being on steroids, it was determined to be atopy and that’s when the shots started. A day later the itching stopped. Still took about a month for the coat to come back.
