A 5.56 can be picked up for $598 on sportsman's guide. This is my first AR purchase, figured I should probably get one just to have. Will only be used for target shooting.

Any recommendations on a scope? Must have upgrades on this particular model? TIA

A trigger is almost always all anyone will ever need and bang for buck it's the most noticeable upgrade.

Board favorite seems to be geisle SSA or SSA-E can be had for around 170 on sale.

Also an up and comer for the more budget minded is the Larue trigger. Can be had for under 100 on sale I think

Don't know if you are dead set on a S&W, but here is a PSA for $499.

If as you said,

You can build them a lot cooler though with a little more budget.

I have it. I recently put a Bushnell TRS-25 on it and the fixed front sight makes for some getting used to. Before, just using the factory iron sights, the gun was spot on right out of the box. I believe they make an optics ready version without the fixed front sight too. I give it two thumbs up as well.

i second the PSA. I picked up their budget "freedom' model upper & lower last year for under $500 and put it through hell. it has had 0 issues- no experience with s&w model tho

The S&W is one of if not the best entry-level AR 15s, same with the Ruger. But for $499 you get 4150 CMV barrel, 1 in 7 twist, shot peened 158 bolt on the PSA - that’s pretty darned good. You probably would do just fine w/4140, 1 in 9, etc., but for same or lower $ you’d be wise to consider the PSA.

If you’re determined to get the S&W or Ruger you can get either for sub-$500 if you’re patient. Gun.deals is a good site to monitor prices.

I bought one to throw in the closet when those first came out and it's still there NIB. That's a great price for the weapon and I like it better than the comparable Ruger version IMO.

My slide fire .22 is also an M&P sport2 as well and I have shot that one and love it!

^^^Solid intel I have two SSA models.
I also have a polished stock trigger that is super slick. It's an easy super cheap upgrade for the OP to start with. Remember he's thinking he's spending $598.00 lol. He is going to need some of the extra cash for his new found addiction.
