Does anyone have any tricks or gadgets to get a deer in the bed of the truck?

I hunt alone on public land and consistently tag deer. Friday I killed a big 6 point about 200 lbs. I could not get it on my 4 wheeler. I had to drag it with the 4 wheeler. I struggled to get it in the bed of the truck. Besides a trailer is there anything else that can make it easy to get it in the truck

They make hoists that attach to your hitch for skinning/processing but could just as easily be used to get it into the bed. I’d use that or rope and determination

ETA: I’d buy this and call it a day

Quite the subtle brag.

Wish I had this problem

I wasn’t bragging if I came off that way I apologize. I guess I should invest in a trailer but I lack real estate at home. Im 47 and struggled with this deer. I drive a Tacoma 4 wheel drive and once you get the old 4trax in the truck there is no much real estate. I ended up running a ratchet strap from my bike to the head and ratcheted the head over the edge of the bed and then after 5-6 attempts was able to man handle the back end in the truck

I guess the whole problem was that I couldn’t get it on the 4 trax

Do you not have a winch on atv or truck? Rope over limb lift with 4 wheeler and back truck under it, or at least back up to it. May have to tie head off in truck bed then pull in hindquarters

I’m sure you tried it but if you can, lift the deers upper body as high as you can onto the rear wheel well of the four wheeler. Hop onto the rack and pull him up the rest of the way, using the wheel well as a slide.

That’s my best Tip. I’ve loaded some brutes that way.

4 wheeler - get the head into the footrest area, stand on the back rack, pull him up using the fender as a slope. This should be done using legs in a deadlift motion.

Truck - use ratchet straps hooked to tie downs to hold the head as high as possible into the bed. Then heave the rear half in. A huge one may require a rear strap and a middle one as a handle, but unfortunately I've never had to try that.

. This.

Another option I've never tried would be to keep a good rope and pulley with you, and find a big tree branch to hoist him up. Then drive the 4 wheeler under.

Easy to load a deer on wheeler. Run the wheeler up a tree to put the rack on the ground. Slide deer up to the rack, roll him into the rack, bungee cord him to the rack, back the wheeler off the tree, and then ride him out.

I have loaded 240# deer this way without any problems. If you don't want to ride it up a tree use the wheeler winch to put the rack on the ground.

Get the winch/hoist rig that fits in a receiver hitch. Weld receiver hitch on 4 wheeler and use it on truck and 4 wheeler. That's what I do. It is at camp now or I would take a picture.

Put the head on the tailgate, climb in the bed , and drag.

I have never seen a deer I could not load in this manner.

At the lease either a simple pulley and tree and back up to it or...

My lease has a small washout I'll drive into and up the side leaving the front wheels up.

Drag deer onto back rack and strap. Then just ride the bike out.

Trailer hitch winch would be your speed. Don't need a hernia.

Yep easiest thing as said is to use a come along, winch, etc. on a tree branch to pick the deer up with. Drive truck or 4 wheeler under it, done.

You could also use a come along from the rear of the truck bed to the antlers and ratchet the head of the deer up over the bed. Then pick the butt up and over or just come a long all the way in.

Get a cargo carrier that fits into your trailer hitch. It will only be a couple feet of the ground. We keep one at the camp just for when someone is hunting alone.

Nah man you good. I was just joshing. Killing just one public land deer is on my bucket list. Much less doing it consistently.

200lb deer is going to be tough to load by yourself no matter how you go about it.

If there is any decent trees nearby you could trow one rope over that then use a 4:1 block n tackle to hoist the deer up then back your truck up under it. Still doesn't help you with getting it on the wheeler though unless you carry the tackle gear into the woods and that might be more trouble than its worth.

I think this is the same block/tackle I have and really like the self-locking mechanism. Though you probably will need a longer rope than what it comes with and if it fits, use 1/2" nylon instead of 3/8. Makes it easier on hands when pulling.

for convenience, grab a sling to go around the deer for lifting:

Thanks for all of the tips. One thing about that buck someone out there must be feeding the deer. I have never seen so much fat on a deer. It literally had 1/2” of fat across the back and sides. I have tagged a lot of bucks over there and never had that much fat. Of course bucks travel a lot maybe it came from a lease. Im about 2 miles from a lease.
