Friend threw one back yesterday before I could tell him to throw it on ice.

two fish that never get thrown back unless they are too small.

Flounder and Pompano.

No, I thought it was a pompano, but he said bluefish

Is there a size/limit?

Those aren't really that close to confuse.

Generally the test is stick your finger in it’s mouth and you can tell pretty quickly which one it is.

I dont think there is any limit on bluefish as they are not desirable table fare.

I've never caught a legal pompano. And I've tried. In several states.

I believe people on the east coast keep and eat bluefish. Unless it's a different "bluefish".

You can eat bluefish if you caught nothing else.

But you have to slit their throat and drain them upside down in salt water pretty quick-like.

Fry them that night or toss them.

I've eaten bluefish we caught in Florida off the beach. Cleaned that day and anything red removed. Fried and on to a sandwich. I loved it.

We catch a few pompano around Fourchon. Very good eating, also have in the past kept bluefish not. Terrible but eatable

Have caught some nice ones at the Belle Pass rocks and the Caminada pass rocks. They get thrown in the box as long as they are big enough to clean.

Mistook a Pompano for a Bluefish???? And this guy presumably is not blind?

By the way, smoked bluefish is pretty damned tasty...makes a great fish dip. Don't know about the ones on the Louisiana gulf coast but those caught in Florida, Georgia, SC and NC are pretty damned good smoked. Also makes a serviceable Ceviche if fresh and diced up small enough.

There’s a well known guide in the area that occasionally posts pictures of ones he catches, he always says those and flounder go into the guides box. Not if I’m paying you for a trip they don’t.

Its the same. They are not terrible. Bleed them (should be done with all fish) and remove the blood line and when they are fresh they are better than Tilapia, in my opinion, but I do not care for Tilapia. They are also very good for smoking and using in dips and the like. Carcasses make an excellent stock. The further north you go along the Atlantic coast the bigger they get. They are a BLAST to catch when they are thick and by thick I mean catching a couple every cast on a spoon with a treble hook.

I landed what we thought was a possible world record Pomp off Horn Island (Mississippi) about 10 years ago. It weighed just a little over 11 pounds on a spring scale that had been in the boat for years so it probably weighed a little over that. Boatside and in that clear water it was a Pomp for certain and a damned big one. Landed and on the deck of the boat it was, at last, a Permit. As it turned out it may well have been a state record Permit, but being accustomed to Permit in Florida and the Carribean mistakenly figured it would be several pounds shy of any kind of record. At the time the biggest Permit ever harvested in Mississippi was barely over 11 pounds. It may or may not have weighed that much, the old scale we used was not in any way accurate. Record or not it ate very well.
