Just acquired a new deer lease looking to see what everyone says are rules that must be put in place to have a successful club. Lease is 1000 acres with 8 members. Thanks in advance for your input.

As few as possible to keep people safe. The issues will be: some people hunt late and some do not. Those that do not tend to drive by those still hunting in stands and piss me off. Another issue: people put lots of time energy money into hunt. Some do not and the the some do not shows up with 3 guests and kills a big deer off your stand. It's these kinds of human nature episodes that bring many many rules. Have guest or no guest. Hunt others stands or only designated stands . Or draw for stands. I tend to try to get out of others way find me a small area and take it over and stay right there, do all the work for that area and leave all the rest to others good luck

Our club in AR is mainly follows state regulations. The only rules are (1) Each member must attend one of the two work weekends and (2) Each member is allowed 3 stands. (3) Clean up after yourself, don't rut up the camp yard and stay off of the septic tank area. (I can't wait til someone breaks that rule because the septic tank has a plywood top with sod over it.)

We have a problem with the number of stands that some members claim and will come to a head in the spring meeting. Some older members keep putting up more and more stands without releasing the old ones.

Rules are for the birds

Get good people and "rules" are irrelevant.

For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would want to be part of a hunting club that didn't allow guests.

Some people can suck the fun out of anything.

Whatever you come up with, somebody will do something that defies common sense that you didn't think you needed a rule for.
Like: Don't take a dump RIGHT were we park the trucks. Walk away 15 or 20 feet.
Or: If you and your guest sky bust geese all morning, don't leave 3 boxes of red hulls scattered on top of the blind.

Also, get everyone's money upfront.

1. Depending on what your trying to accomplish, bucks should be either 8 or better OR one lesser buck per member (+ cull bucks)

2. If possible, discourage shooting of young 8 pt's.

3. If you want to allow guests, they should have more stringent rules. (I.e. does and 140+ only) or something like that.

4. I don't like the idea of claiming area or stands. We always draw. Everyone helps keep up all the stands. Some stands should be for members only, though.

5. Guest fees work well to limit guest traffic and raise money for the club. Usually guests have no qualms about paying them, if not, charge the member.

6. No more than 2 guests/weekend per member.

Hope this helps...

I would have 5-6 camp stands for anyone anytime. I like the fact we let members claim up to 2 personal stands for them and whoever they choose. Def get work out of every member and collect money in advance. Good luck

I like the way my father in laws lease is set up. He was in a camp where people put too much pressure on deer so the only time they killed deer was after 515.

His new lease is set up where every member gets his/her own area. They can plant or not plant or do whatever they want with their area. If someone is hunting your area without permission they are out of the club immediately.

Also, guests pay 25 bucks per hunt or 50$ a day and no loaded guns in camp.
