how will these hold up if stained and sealed properly? they wont be in direct sunlight and will be somewhat out of the elements. how much fading will take place. also humidity keeps the area pretty wet from time to time even when there is no rain. in lafayette for reference.

My father in law doesn't have a cypress counter top but he has a bunch of cypress in his outdoor kitchen. Even areas that don't see sun the sealant is pealing. Not as bad as the areas that see the sun but it still flakes/peals. cypress is also a soft wood. So for a counter top it will get beat up. I would go with something more durable.

I would go with a poured concrete with wood grain pattern and stain the concrete to look like Cypress.

i plan on building all of my patio furniture out of cypress but will likely use a sheet of stainless to cover the counter tops. I've got no intentions of fricking with it because I love the weathered/grayed look of cypress. To answer your question, I think you'll be resealing them every couple of yrs. it's soft and I haven't ran across a product that really holds up

any recommendations for woods to use as counter tops?

im also not doing masonry for the island. i and going to bead board the island and paint it, then trim it out with the same color or a darker stain.

For wood in kitchens, see John Boos. I have an island topped with end grain rock maple which is twelve years old and I cut on it every day, and it looks brand new.

Maple will be your most stable. Hard maple is used for counter tops and cutting boards.

Larch wood is a soft wood that's good for countertops as well. There's a company called Larchwood that makes butchers blocks and end grain countertops you can check out
