Budget would be $1,000 to $2,000 before optics.

I would like to use it for big game hunting at longer ranges

You might want to go buy one off the shelf.

I can extend that to 5k-7k if that’s what it costs

This is the first time I have even toyed with the idea

I was gonna recommend Kelblys until I saw your budget. For a sub $2K build, I would typically recommend an older Rem 700 action, that is blueprinted, S.S. select Match barrel , and a used HS Precision take off stock. Build would come in under $1500. Unfortunately Rem has gone to shite and you will lose your arse on the investment.

As ugly as Savage rifles are, I’d recommend a factory Savage 110 FCP that will shoot lights out.

Well, you're pretty limited there.

Rem 700 magnum action for $400, barrel it for about $600, mcmillian stock for another $600, and a $200 trigger maybe? Thats probably doable.

An off the shelf rifle is probably a better route to go here, especially if you're set on a 338 lapooah. I believe savage has one.

Ballpark around $3000

I’ve been building / consulting on custom rifles for 25+ years. I’d be glad to help you out and point you in the right direction. My suggestion, buy components separately and deliver them to your gunsmith of choice. I’ll help you find everything you need

First off, you don’t want a 338 LM based on a Rem 700 action. It is not a really good option. There are some out there, but the better and more accurate guns are built on stronger actions with bolts made for the really heavy magnums.
I would recommend RW Snyder at Snyder custom guns from Iowa. LINK /. He is known for very fair prices and bug hole groups. I have a 6mm Dasher that shoots well under 1/2 moa. Price was very, very fair.
You will get it fast, fair price and superb workmanship.

FYI - the “ln” is for Little Nasty. I designed and created a custom .17 caliber wildcat specifically for shooting coyotes. Load is 22.0 grs of powder under a 25gr bullet at 4100 fps

I built 2 different 17 LN’s

Blaze had an hour conversation with me once about rifle builds out of the kindness of his heart. Good people

Thx for the compliment brother. 30 yrs ago, knowledgeable reloaders and prominent gunsmiths taught me about building custom rifles. I’m all about helping others and sharing my experience with those who are where I once was. You don’t have to spend $5000 on a custom rifle build. You can easily spend $1500 - $2500 on a really nice rifle that will shoot 1/4” groups.

Any OB’ers that have custom rifle questions, feel free to email me. I’ll call you on my dime and answer any questions you have.

You sure you want a .338? They are more expensive to shoot than most options that will realistically do the same thing. .300prc with 250 grain ATIP (higher BC than pretty much any .338 bullet) will do everything you need for less. For 2K, that ruger precision will do everything you need. If you want to spend more, call blaze and have a chat. Go full custom with a custom action and chassis. Or if you want to go expensive production, go Accuracy International, Cadex, Barrett, or even Sako TRG. You could also go with a Blaser if you want a straight pull.

Get a 7mm RUM. I have one. Amazing gun. Compare the ballistics of the 2.

I'd draw the line somewhere around the .338 win mag for hunting. Good ammo availability and a great western big game caliber.

Hunting throws all this way off and really erases any benefit the big .338 gives you.

The Remington ultra mags are a little behind now in cartridge design.

Look at the .300 prc like Chat said or the .300 Norma and maybe the .30 Nosler.

If you load, and you will want to with any of those cartridges, the Norma would be my choice. If not You might be well served to get you ammo from a custom ammo maker like Unknown Ammunitions.
