I have hunted with a compound for years, but my old bow cable needs replacing and I decided to just skip bow hunting this year and maybe forever.

Well I have been working some OT and figured I might reward myself with a crossbow. I have never shot one before.

Any recommendation on a cheap crossbow for a guy that is teetering on not even getting one and probably will not be all gungho on hunting hard and heavy with it.

Are the cheap Xbows trash are would on of the 230 dollar bows at least safely shoot straight.

Not looking to pay money for the fastest and best out there. Just something that will get the job done when I ask it too.

Second hand is definitely and option.

Tips? Thoughts? Advice?

By no means am I an expert, but I had a cheap crossbow and it was very difficult to shoot accurately. You had to cock it the exact same every time or the string would jump and I would miss high.
I know what some are thinking. How hard is it to cock it the same or who can't cock a crossbow, but it wasn't that simple. The speed of cock and angle the bow was sitting when cocked had to be exactly the same.
Now my father in law has a 10 point crossbow which is more expensive and you can robinhoood arrows pretty easy with that.

I had the Barnett Wildcat. My dad decided to give up compound bows after shoulder problems. He just purchased a mid grade Excalaber and it shoots nice. I find it's a little loud, but it shoots fast enough to not have to worry about that spooking deer.
Im not sure about the Raptor. I would do a lot of research before buying. Maybe I just bought a lemon but I was disappointed with mine and went back to compound bow hunting.

Whatever you get make sure the arm that retains arrow on rail is metal, not plastic.

So we have one of these guys who must hunt with a Mathews 80 lb draw weight and kill 6 deer a year bc he's a real American bada$$.

No I'm not crippled, elderly, or a woman. I used a crossbow because of where I hunted. Marsh islands with no cover other than natural grass where the deer and hogs had to get real close to you to get a shot. I tried hunting with a compound bow there and I will admit, I wasn't good enough to draw back without spooking or in enough time to get a shot. So call me what you want, but it's guys like you that ruin hunting for kids and others. Trying to be an internet tough guy.

Believe it or not I gave up my excalibur for a center point sniper 370 on Amazon and I freaking love it. Paid around 300 for it and bought some nicer bolts bc the ones that came with it are crap. I have it dialed in at 45 yds and feel very comfortable to 65. It is quiet and a hell of a deal. Fuk the haters

Eta

My friend just shot it and is returning his wicked ridge and savind $250. His had a 5lb drawing mechanism that was nice but not $250 nice he said. Muzzy mx 3 boadheads carbon express bolts and bow for $335 FTW

I have the wicked ridge invader. Very pleased with it for 400 bucks. I drive tacks out to 40 yards, haven't shot it further than that.

Not trying to be a hater, but please don't take shots that long. I started out on a crossbow and had to go back to one last year due to surgery. These are not rifle fast and it will spook a deer at that distance. I know they are accurate and I have no problem with anyone using them just because they feel like it. That said 40 is about max on what I think is a responsible shot and that is only under the right conditions.

No problem. I agree 40 yds is a good "maximum" but it's fun as hell target practicing at 60 with a stick. I did drop a doe (after about 100yds)at 50 last year with my Excalibur. I aimed a little high and she did flinch down a bit (luckily). I am constantly amazed at a deer's reflexes.

I have the centerpoint sniper 370. You can pick it up on amazon for $260. All metal frame and 370fps.

I would recommend replacing with a solid aftermarket string, but other than that you cant beat it for the money.

Look at some youtube videos.
