Looking at a new reel. Would be paired with a St Croix Avid.

Any thoughts between these? Cronarch MGL seems long in the tooth but well regarded. No experience with a Tranx.
I mainly through soft plastics.

I like my Curado K and would keep it rigged as a back up. Never had an issue in the salt with it.

Tranx. Chronarch MGL has known corrosion issues when used in saltwater environments.
If you're set on a Chronarch though, the Chronarch G is a saltwater safe version of the MGL, though seems to be discontinued.

The MG’s aren’t saltwater safe, meaning you better give it a bath after use everything. Saying that, I have a Chronarch 50 mg and Core 100 mg that have held up to my abuse. I’m going to 8:1’s for my personal reels, Lews tournament pro lite.

Of the 2 you mentioned, get the tranx.

If you arent put off by ordering from a JDM website, youve got some otber great options from shimano. This website (digitaka) will charge you 10% on top of list price for duty/tarriffs but then nothing else unexpected and it will show up at your door in under a week usually.

Shimano Stile ($320) - this is a saltwater specific reel. Shares a frame with the Aldebaran.

Metanium DC 70 ($340)

Either a Lew’s or Bates Salty Hundo are the correct answer. I would’ve said 13 Concept C2 or TX2 until they were bought out by PE.

Want to stick with a 7’ on the boat.
Will probably go with the medium light. It shows a lure weight of 1/8 to 1/4, and I’m sure I could cast 1/2 ounce if I needed to.

Tranx 150. Magnesium has mega issues in saltwater

If you want to take a look at another reel I really like my Daiwa Coastal 80 and 150

I have read that since being bought out by Rapala/Pure Fishing the 13 Fishing reel parts availability has all but dried up and warranty/customer service is awful.

All heresay though. No personal experience.

I have switched to all Shimano & Daiwa for freshwater and inshore unless its so good of a deal I wont mind tossing it when it breaks.

I do have a few Penn reels for offshore stuff and they are doing fine (admittedly a Pure Fishing product).

No one was more excited about the Bates Salty Hundo than me. Ive gotten to use it several times now and the performance is just not there. It doesnt cast as far as my older model curado, and the brake system isnt nearly as good. Yes its built like a tank but it needs the performance to match.

Ive never used a Lews reel once in my life, but two of the best inshore guys I know of on the Texas coast that fish more in a month than I do in two years have used them for years.

No idea how many trout I have caught with my lews reels. They get terrible treatment and still keep working.

You have chosen wisely. 13 was just like Lew's and Abu... made by Korean manufacturer. Not that Doyo is bad, I just hate the lack of transparency.

Good rec. Had Curado’s since the late 90’s but heard good things about the Coastal. Variety is the spice of life…

Fished with a guide in Corpus who said Bates gave him some for marketing and he said the same thing. He wouldnt fish them even if they were free.

Bates Salty Hundo

Speaking of lack ot transparency...

Bates markets itself as USA but their reels are made by Loongze, a Chinese reel manufacturer.

Now Loongze makes some good stuff, but I wouldnt put them on par with the same price point Daiwa & Shinano reels.

They do a good job marketing themselves as a local small business though.

The salty Hundo I have casts a country mile. No complaints so far even though it’s fairly new.

I do still like my 13 concepts but they seemed to disappear since they got bought out which leaves me skeptical of parts. My C2 is in better shape than my TX2. TX2 closed bearings sing like a mofo now.

I have a really good buddy who only throws Lew’s custom lites and they are legit. I have 2 Lew’s tournaments that I used to use all the time and loved them. Just got more stuff and sort of stopped using them for no good reason.

I am a former Shimano guy and there are just others out there that cast way by them and have better/stronger drag systems.
