My local minnow store closed a couple years ago. The next closest is 20 minutes one way. Now that is closing down.

There's a petsmart near me that sells feeder fish, two different types, one is a minnow looking fish by it's not a fathead, the other is like small gold fish.

I'm sure crappie would eat them, but is there any risk in using these as bait in a small 4.5 ac pond?

I am pretty sure that there are laws/regulations against the use of goldfish. Would you get caught on a private pond? Depends on who you know.

It’s not illegal to use goldfish for bait.Just don’t release any leftover goldfish in the lake or pond.

Biggest crappie I ever caught was on a bubble eyed fantailed goldfish.

That was in north central Oklahoma in crystal clear water though. Had better luck with shiners in most stained to muddy Louisiana waters.

The problem I had with goldfish was the fish would inhale them so voraciously they were often gut hooked. Not good when there’s undersized bass and cats that should be released to grow.

Yep - They sell them at the local bait store where I fish, people put them on set hooks (the big ones) and trot lines.

Apparently they a tough and hard to kill

Thank for the update. I've never tried here, but I know in a few states further north that I've fished in, you get caught, you're gonna pay and maybe not fish legally for a while.

Caught plenty on feeder goldfish, but if they have feeder ruby reds that's the way to go. This time of year you'll probably do better with Crappie Magnet jigs in Sho'Nuff or Electric Chicken though, depending on water clarity.

Good luck either way.
