Top water dogs or such as that to start with. Of course plastics. Later in the morning, live shrimp help a lot. You will need a landing net. Any net will work, just get a piece of pool noddle to add to the handle to float it and a piece of rope. A stringer is needed. Make one up, small rope and a piece of pool noddle to float the fish off the bottom or crabs will get your fish.

Please don't do this. You are just trolling for sharks. Spend a few dollars and get s float basket for your fish with a long lead rope.

This. You ever see the episode of Out Da Bayou when a shark jumps his shite on Chandeleur Islands? I would have shite myself.

Or you could make your own. Get a laundry bag with holes in it, put in a piece of Styrofoam or pool noodle for some buoyancy, and attached a longer string to tie it to you. Voila.

Spent many days in the water down there and never had a problem with a shark. Sure, it can happen, but that is why I said a piece of rope to get the fish away from you.

It's a fun and different way to fish compared to out of a boat. We started doing it a couple years ago. Now every summer we rent a camp on the beach in Grand Isle with about 10 of us. It's a blast. May and June is usually when they are the thickest. You can still catch in July too.
What lure/bait would you recommend?

I've never had an issue with sharks surf fishing GI and I've spent plenty time in the water with filled floating baskets.
The thing that scares me the most is when the Dolphins start getting in on the action. Those damn things come so close to you it's scary. Just waiting for one to take my knees out one day.

Last time I fished GI it was like feeding dogs from the table when we'd throw back little fish.

I have heard of people putting large magnets in their baskets. It is supposed to affect the shark's electromagnetic sensory and "mask" the fish in the bag.

I use topwaters early A guy I used to fish with only fishes a silver spoon. He reels it real fast on top the water and gets it skipping. They crush it.

Sand in the crabs? Never had that problem with surf caught crabs unless they are getting sandy from sitting in the basket in the beach
