I have a 2017 Lariat F250 6.7 Fx4 and there is a constant typewriter noise coming from what sounds like the driver side under the hood. I have read other threads that talked about a similar noise right after oil changes and what not but my noise never goes away. Does anyone have any insight to this? Is it normal or should I get it looked at? I mean all i hear is the noise and I cant even enjoy the sound of the engine because of it. It is loudest when accelerating but is constant at highway speeds.

I posted this to a Ford Diesel forum but I figured I would give the outdoor board a try as well.

???????Thanks guys, any help or opinions are appreciated!

It gets louder when you accelerate and when you level off to say 60 mph it levels off and it is a constant typewriter ticking sound and that is all I hear

look under the hood at night when its in the dark, it may be a spark plug wire shorting to the engine rather then through the plug, it happens when the plug boots split.

it makes a typewriter type tick tick tick noise

I am about 1000 miles from needing my oil changed so its not the ticking that people have reported after an oil change.

I'm asking because if they put the wrong oil in, and it has sheered down, they make a pretty good racket.

Damn now you are really scaring me!

I have had all of the oil changes at gateway ford in Ponchatula and from what I have heard they are a great service shop. I wouldnt imagine they put the wrong oil in at least i hope not.

A lot of them tick. That isn't a worry.

Type writer is different.

I would change the oil and see what the sound does.

Delo fixed ticks in our fleet trucks.

No need to be scared of ticking just yet

Everywhere lets oil change guys. Usually kids. It isn't that big of a deal if they did swap in the wrong oil. A lot of cj/ck4 oils meet Ford's weird spec.

That engine really isn't that hard on oil. But over time the wrong oil will sheer down in a diesel and not lubricate as well.

I'd spend the money a little early and swap it out then go from there. It is likely just a stuck lifter.

Another thing to look for depending on sound is an exhaust manifold leak. It will also make an annoying tap/tick sound.

Check to make sure there’s not a zip-tie on the drive shaft or uv joint. Disregard if you don’t play pranks on your friends or have friends that do!!

From a ford technician: This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block, crankshaft journal, bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. The noise can be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound, like random typing on a mechanic typewriter. This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise appear new when in fact it was masked by other noises in the past......

this is what a failed injector sounds like
