Fisrt off I am not a hunter. My 14 year old Son and I went hunting this last weekend. We used a Beretta Tikka lite 2 WSM 300 short mag with a Carl Zeiss scope. He really liked the gun, it fit him really well and he talked about it on the ride home.

This setup, I was told, is around $2,300 with the case and all. I don't mind spending the money on something he can use the rest of his life but is there a comparable rifle we should also look at?

He does hunt a couple times a year with his Uncle and I can see myself taking him in the future being I have access to some property.

My only advice is don't buy a 300 magnum for a first rifle. If he's only deer hunting it is completely unnecessary

Nice rifle but you don’t HAVE to spend that much.

I like the Browning A bolts, the Ruger M77 and the Winchester 70s

$2300 is high, you can easily get a good setup for under 1K.

Did he shoot the rifle? How big a boy is he?
That sounds nice though, but you can probably get him a nice Tikka in whatever reasonable caliber, with a decent Leupold, for levenhunderdish

He shoots a good bit but doesn't have one of his own except for a 22. I will keep that into consideration.

He did not. He has shot a .270, 30-30 and my SKS.

Well, that gun is about $650. The rest of that 2300 is all scope.

Eta - updated my price. They've gone up

Great rifles, I think they are about $750 and come with good scope mounts that are really lightweight.

Get that in a caliber he likes and a $500 scope and he'll be set for life.

Eta: I agree with the others that a .300 is probably not the best choice. Its going to kick pretty damn hard in that light of a rifle and is way overkill for deer. A .30-06 would cover him for most anything he wants to hunt in America.

I'm a complete Tikka fanboy and hunt with a Tikka Hunter 270wsm (walnut stock is the differebce). I would stick with the Tikka probably in .270, .308 or .30-06. Don't go magnum or hard to find calibers.

Spend about $400 on a scope and be out the door with a GREAT setup for $1000.

Leopold vx3 and he is set

IMHO you don't need a magnum for whitetail. If you are going out west for larger game such as elk or bear then carry a magnum. Standard calibers are find for deer out to 3-400 yds with the proper techniques.

In that case, and this is just my personal option (my primary deer rifle is a 300wsm), get him a different caliber. The 300wsm is a lot of gun for his age and not needed unless hunting bigger stuff than whitetail in the gulf south. My recommendation on caliber would be:

Non-magnum: 7mm-08 or 6.5 creedmoor
I really like both but you can’t go wrong with 308 either

Magnum: 270wsm.
I believe this is one of the best deer calibers ever made. No “magnum recoil” but incredible ballistics and very effective.

There are lots of great rounds out there and even more that will get the job done. These are just my personal favorites (at the moment).

ETA: 308, 7-08, 6.5 creed would be MUCH cheaper to shoot and therefore more fun for a kid that likes and wants to shoot. However right now all ammo (except the weatherby mags it seems) are very hard to find.

Well...that's a lot of gun, and I all I've got is my opinion, but a big rifle will dim their interest, if they shoot one much when they're young.

Thanks for all the input. I will check out all the suggestions. I am not in a hurry as it will be for his b-day in March.

Get a popular rifle in .308. .308 will kill any game in North America.

Love the 308. Killed a deer Saturday with it.

Shot two hogs with my 7.62x39 and they dropped on the spot also.

Plenty of ammo options.

30-06 is a great selection also.

308 I've shot since I was 11. Plenty accurate and kills dead.

I'll add a different perspective: if I had $1500 to spend on a rifle, I'd spend $500 on the rifle and $1000 on the glass. There is very little that can be done to improve a scope once you buy it, but a rifle with a good action can be incrementally improved over and over as desired (new stock, float the barrel, trigger, etc...). Furthermore, almost any rifle off the shelf is going to be more accurate than the person shooting it. But lesser quality optics don't care who is looking through them. Id spend the bulk of whatever your budget is on good glass and back into your rifle that way.

Any common caliber is great. 243, 30-06, 308, 270, 6.5, 300, the WSMs, etc... there are really a million calibers that are overly sufficient for whitetail hunting in the southeast.

So buy good glass and then find the best deal left on a name brand rifle in a common caliber.

I completely disagree. You can get a leupold vx3 for ~$400. To my eyes, I've not looked through a scope that was measurably better than a regular vx3 that wasn't over $2k. If you can clearly see up till after legal shooting hours, that's all that matters.

Faced with the same decision I got a model 70 extreme weather with a leupold vx3i. I'm happier with that than I would have been with a ruger American and a $1000 scope.

Ruger American or M77 with a Leupold VX-3 will be great at sub $800.

You don’t need to spend obscene amounts of money on a hunting rifle unless you just want to do so. Spend the extra $1200 taking him on a hunting trip somewhere and make some memories.
