Wanted to get the outdoor boards thoughts on these two. Will be getting a truck for the first time next year, and curious if the cost of leather is worth it. I have always thought leather would be easier to keep clean, but I am sure I could get aftermarket seat covers and not worry about it.

Leather

Easier cleanup but also better resale value of vehicle later down the road

If you spend money on seat covers, you’re on your way to the cost of leather. Get leather.

Definitely get leather of vinyl. Cloths let's the butt sweat and farts get to the foam

you can always add leather if you want to save money after purchasing a truck.

but.........you're best bet is to save money and get neoprene. especially if you're a duck hunter.

Unless you get the KR or higher trim package you really aren’t getting good leather. The catskins in my xlt are light years better than my lariat pleather. Normally put 150,000 on trucks and leather is trashed by then anyway.

I have 181k miles on my xlt with cloth. Its held up well. One small tear at the seam where I slide over getting in/out and 2 little worn looking spots. They aren't ever hot or cold. I dont have fancy seat warmers or AC.

My wife's Denali leather looks good and has all the fancy stuff.

I have 330k on a 2008 Silverado with cloth seats and there is not a single tear. Every car I’ve owned with leather has developed cracks. I was telling my wife (no pics) a few days ago that I would probably choose cloth on my next truck. Resale is not a factor for me since I drive them forever. If you trade/sell often, go with leather.

I have a 2006 Tundra that has cloth seats...
I put Marathon Seat Covers on when I got the truck...
Shadow Grass but they have all types...
I've been in them with muddy wet waders and dogs...
water and mud beads up and can be wiped off...
they've held up well and the cloth seats are in perfect shape...

It seems the “standard” leather and even the vinyl seats have gone to complete trash for many brands.

I don’t know if it’s because everyone wants perforated with seat coolers or what.

Toyota’s leather from early 2000s is 1000x better than today’s.

The new Chevy vinyl is horrible (it only comes in Jet Black to boot-no gray). I don’t see it lasting 5 years. It has almost a rubber feel to it. On the other hand Chevy trucks with the blue vinyl from the 90s seems to last forever.

It’ll be cheaper to just get cloth seats re-done with Catskin leather for $2k or less.

ETA: The non-perforated leather in the Chevy trucks seem fine (if you can still get that), but might not be worth the whole upgrade package to get leather.

New Chevy truck owner here, the leather was a 1k option on my truck so that’s what I went with. First time having leather in any of my vehicles and love it.

Take the cloth package if all you want is leather.

Check out katskinz. Find a dealer and drop you truck off there and pick your colors down to the stitching. Cost about $1200 for a crew cab including console.

I’ve had three trucks in the last 8 years. First one, lariat had leather, second XLT had sport cloth (or whatever it’s called), current XLT has sport cloth. After 100,000 miles in the lariat with leather and the XLT with 90,000 miles and sport cloth, I wanted the sport cloth in this truck. Leather cracked over time, was hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and wasn’t really any easier to clean due to the vent holes throughout the material. Sport cloth stays clean enough, doesn’t wear out, and doesn’t change temperatures with the seasons. I also found that I slid around a bit on the leather. The sport cloth maintains a better purchase while driving.

I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer Cloth. I went with the Tundra SR5 TSS.

I have a set of clazzio's seat covers in my Tacoma. A bit pricey, but the seat covers hug the seats very well and is leather.

I have found that the sport cloth actually holds up better than leather. 2012 F150 XLT here. The cloth is still going strong.
