It will absolutely not close with an empty mag, unless you activate the slide release lever. You can can jam an empty mag in as hard as you'd like and the slide will not close.
Many people have documented this auto forward, or automatic release, feature on HKs and no where have I found it related to a failure. Out of the box P30s, VP9s...

I've only ever had Glocks do this

I had a Chinese Tokarev that would do this, and it didn't require much force on insertion (if a mag was loaded it would close and chamber).
So far, this doesn't happen with the following other pistols I own:
CZ 75, Beretta 92, Sig P226, Hi Power, etc...
I could name a bunch of lesser known (and some not so lesser known) guns, and the result is the same. If the slide is locked back, inserting a mag will not drop the slide.

My XDM does it depending how hard I put a new mag in. I don't do it intentionally but when it happens I get back on target just fine. Basically if it happens I don't care but I certainly don't practice reloading with the intention of doing it because it isn't repeatable.

Just tried it on my Shield 9mm. Worked 1 out of 4 times of slamming the shite out of the mad when seating it.
Doesn't seem like it's very reliable, in my weapon at least.
Side note: gun has only fired about 100 rounds.

In my M9 you have to be gentle with it for it to not slam shut. I thought that was how it was supposed to work. Might have worn out slide stop?

This guy is correct. It all depends on the weapon.
True. It also depends on how worn the gun is. The SR9c I sold my friend had about 5k rounds through it and it will close the slide on a slam. Ms Bapple's VP9 will also do it, even when it was brand new.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the M&P full sized handguns. If I recall, the M&P was designed to close the slide when a loaded mag is slammed home. They added a small tab to the frame portion of the slide release on the 2.0 versions to prevent this because they got a lot of negative feedback about it.
Not sure if that addition to the gun has been tested extensively though.

Not necessarily. It's just a matter of physics sometimes.
My advice to people is to not depend on that slide going home on a slam but to learn to deal with it if it happens. If it closes, keep putting rounds on target. If the slide doesn't shut, hit the release or overhand rack it. Do whatever you have to do to get back in the fight ASAP.
