JACKSON – A white-tailed deer collected on January 25, 2018 in Issaquena County has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). The deer was a 4.5-year-old male that died of natural causes and was reported to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

This is the first time an animal in Mississippi has tested positive for the disease, which is fatal to white-tailed deer. MDWFP will immediately implement the CWD Response Plan under the auspices of the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

Pursuant to the Order of the Executive Director on behalf of the Commission, effectively immediately, supplemental feeding is banned in the following counties: Claiborne, Hinds, Issaquena, Sharkey, Warren, and Yazoo.

This is not good.

Don’t know the harvest rules for Mississippi, but get ready for a slaughter. Arkansas got rid of the 3 point rule in the part of the state where they have found it.

Damn, thats right in the heart of the best deer hunting MS has to offer.

Wonder what this entails? Decrease deer number to a minimum to try and slow spread like the prev post mentioned?

Wonder if this is the result of some high-fence importing deer from a contaminated area.

Lower the price in that nonresident license and open the slaughter.

I will probably catch flack for this but there should really be some discussion on ending high fence and breeding programs until we can get a better handle on the issue and learn more about it. At least require double fencing with a no man's land in between to keep from contact with wild herds.

So this would be corn, bran etc? Im guessing food plots are not considered supplemental.

that would be my guess as well. I think feeding was just legalized a year or two ago in MS. looks like that will be short-lived.

Sorry but I'd rather go a little over board and be careful, you'll just have to take a break from posting your dead tame deer photos for awhile.

Fyi there is research that shows close to 40% of cases have been traced back to pin operations so yea frick your shooting zoo.

Maybe... possibly because it’s a controlled testable setting. I mean how many wild deer are tested each year compared to captive deer? Feeding deer, which I’m sure you never do, is just as much a catalyst for promoting CWD as anything else.

We don't know how many wild deer vs penned deer are tested each year. Do you?

Wait how is supplemental feeding responsible?

Well considering most large captive populations have CWD testing protocols in place, I’d venture to say more captive deer are tested versus wild. Nearly the only time a wild deer is tested is after it has passed. There may be more concrete numbers out there.

Pens need to be outlawed for sure. The pleasure of a few could ruin the fun of many.
