if he stays outside all day, every day, I think digging holes is inevitable. My lab stays inside most of the time now, but when I had a fence I would keep him out there a lot and he would dig at least a few holes every day

May be a dumb question but put his shite on top after i fill the hole back up or bury it in the hole?
A little of both

in doggy years, he's pretty much hitting 50 years on the dot. Typical doggy mid life crisis. Maybe dye his head blonde and get him a doggy convertible.

If its one hole big deal. I have three and they have a spot dug out that's a cool spot for them. Got tired of filling it in so its their little piece of the pie. Now if he's digging holes everywhere then Houston we have a problem. Put him in a kennel until you get home.

I have a mutt that used to dig a hole in the same spot. It was probably due to pent up energy and separation anxiety. I spanked her a few times in front of the hole, but that didn't stop her.
So I started filling the hole with sand and cayenne pepper powder after she would dig it out. She stopped digging it out after 2-3 more times, and hasn't dug a hole anywhere since.

Take that sucker to a pond and throw him a ball for about two hours.
Watch him sleep
Rinse repeat

Kennel him when you are not home.
Hand thrown bumpers are probably very boring for him. Do some pile work at varying distances and locations.
