When I was a kid, my neighbor had a couple of chestnut trees that he grew for about 20 years( he really took care of those), until they got sick and he cut them down.
At a certain time of year, they would put out a distinct smell. I was allergic to that and would get the sniffles bad.
Well yesterday afternoon, I was walking around the house and caught a smell that I recognized from way back. My nose is running this morning.
I live around a lot of woods. Are there chestnut trees growing out there again?

Maybe. There has been an effort to plant Asian varieties of chestnuts (and hybrids) that are immune to the blight that killed our native chestnuts.

There are a few natives that people have found in the woods but not many.

I've planted 20-30 at my place. They are doing well. They're all hybrids though.

There is a tree nursery about twenty miles from where I live. He specializes in chestnut trees. He has an orchard.

I can't be positive about what I smelled. It's been a long time, but it was the first thing that crossed my mind.

Folks had some Chinese Chestnuts. Don't remember a smell, but the seedpod shells were sharp as hell.

I planted a few “dunstan” chestnuts over the winter, they are a hybrid of the American chestnut and a Chinese relative. Supposedly blight tolerant, we will see.

This drought is stunting them right now but I’m told they’ll bear fruit in 4-5 years

Will the deer still hit them with the sharp outer shell? Imagine so as it was the dominant tree in the eastern US.

From what I remember from when I was a kid (there was a chestnut across from my grandparents house), the outer shell will open before it falls. Sometimes they shell will stay on the tree or is open enough for the deer to be able to get the nuts out of the shell.

That's been a long time ago, so I may be misremembering some.
