I'm considering getting a retriever to train or send off to be trained for duck hunting. I mostly duck hunt in Venice, but I also would like it to be able to come to the deer camp with me and hangout. I've read up on chessies and know they tend to have a strong personality. I love the look and build of a chessie, but I know it will be hard to find one, especially one with a good hunting pedigree. Anyone with experience on both breeds? Any contact where to find a puppy of either breed with a good hunting bloodline?

I've been researching it a lot too. I see where I could be hesitant on a Chessie after reading some things, but then again I read a lot that has me sold on them too.

Don't believe anything you read or here from anyone who hasn't owned one.

DM ran rampant through top lines a decade ago but that's fixed

Very easy to find good ones w hunting lineage

I have owned both and won ribbons with both - if I were to get another retriever in would be another brown dog....

I have always owned labs because I like their drive and desire to please. I have however hunted with Cheasapeakes and all of them were perfect except for one that only the owner could take the goose from him. Was an aggressive dog but a great hunting dog.

On a side note I run in field trials and could help introduce to some of the owners of Chesapeake’s for a real perspective on how the animals are around the home and with children.

Reading these post from y'all who have actually hunted with chessies actually has me leaning even more towards a chessie. The thing is labs are everywhere and easy to find, chessies not as much.

Buddy from Va had a male and female he hunted and also bred. The female was great but the male definitely had a mean streak. He was good with me since I knew him from a pup. Good hunting dogs.

I’ve been around a few chessies and they were one owner/handler dogs. Definitely more on the aggressive/dominant side than the majority of labs...but, you have to consider that there is a much larger sample size of labs. I personally am a lab guy and I would never want to take the chance of having a chessie that would only work for me. I’m in a camp with other guys and would want them to be able to take and handle my dog if I wasn’t able to make it out on the hunt, etc.

the aggressive chessies are few and far between nowadays... they do bond stronger with the people they are around the most and ignore "new" people.

and they are not cookie cutter like labs...

Been happy with all of my labs. All have unique personalities and all loved being outdoors with me

Ive been around some good chessies but the last i was around wanted to bite any sog ir person not its owner. And it wasnt an owner issue

personally though I would not buy a lab or a chessie without full health clearances - especially DM

What type of camp? If it's just you and your family, I have no opinion. If it's a club with lots of others, and occasional guests, no Chessie.

that's all about exposure.... My chessie was at a commercial lodge 40 plus days a year with different people there every 2 days.... she never had a problem with any people or kids..... only problem was with another dog that growled at my son - which led to a body check and nip.... then it was done...and it was not a chessie that growled

Not every dog is going to be a problem, it's just that between the two breeds, Chessie's are more likely to be one. It's like leaving a loaded handgun with no safety on a table. You can't control what someone else is going to do with it.

My dad and my uncle swear by the Chessies. I swear by the labs. It all depends what you want from your dog. I like to be in total control of my dog in the field to ensure that we don't lose birds. My dad likes to let the dog hunt and enjoy himself in the blind. My dad has had 2 chessies, and they have both pretty much been the same. They can be tough to train. I'm not saying you can't be in total control of a chessie and have him well trained, but to me it is way more work than it's worth to have a well trained chessie vs. a well trained lab.

His chessie is a pure hunter, but extremely hard headed. I have trained him and my dad has worked with him a little bit, but he has by far been the tougher dog to train than my lab. When you send him to get a birds there is no stopping him and working him on a blind. He just hunts on his own.
Ill also say that the chessie has a ton of drive and is tough as nails. The are really good hunting dogs, but I just prefer labs.

Cousin has a Chessie. He's very headstrong or stubborn depending on how you look at it. Good hunter, just not the easiest dog to get along with. Damn good retriever, but it's a job to work with him when he doesn't want to retrieve. I wanted a Chessie before I saw him work with that dog a few times. I decided I'd stick with Labs. If you have the time and put for the effort...they can be damn good...but you gotta work them. And I don't know if someone else can train them and then hand them off...they are oriented to one man too much.

I’m sorry counselor, but, I’m not allowing the Smith vs Jones 1962, “what if” case to be used.
It’s not pertinent and it’s not going to be admissible. Jurors, please disregard the last statement.
