I’ve had 3 Chessies. Great dogs but do have their own personality. Luckily I know a good trainer who understands these dogs. They have one drive in life . To please their human. Males tend to be protective. I had one that couldn’t stand the sight of another dog but in the marsh he was a marine. Dog loved to hunt and never gave up. You can’t be hard on them . If they feel you are not please they kind of shut down. I always use positive inforcement with them and they react well. Most of their behavior has been covered here. Definitely the dog of my choice.

Lab, they are protective and loyal, great bird dogs, and retrieve like no others. I know, I breed them!

My parents owned one after I moved out and they’d have to lock that beast up every time I came home. He did not like anyone other than my parents. The fact that he had a head like a bear and weighed 140# was very unnerving... think CUJO.
