Checking in a pistol before flight

I've got a couple of business trips in June and I would like to bring my trusty Shield with me, I've never flown with a firearm before. I know the basics.. check in the firearm, hard case with locks, unloaded, etc.. but has anyone done this recently? Advice? Anyone have a good case they recommend?

I have not done it but I do know that besides TSA regulations there are airline regulations also. What airline and also where to? I would have concerns if I was passing through any of the main cities up north, especially NYC...

My flight hasn't been booked yet but it will be to Indianapolis.

Not any more -- used to be a requirement.

No. Reading the TSA regulations, you'll think a TSA like IS required. But unless the regs have changed since I flew w/ guns 6/12, you do NOT have to use TSA lock. The TSA locks are flimsy and expensive; they look like something that would come out of a box of "Cracker Jacks." Buy 2 nice padlocks that are keyed alike and use that instead of the TSA locks. The airlines push the TSA locks because they're more convenient for them. If TSA decides to open your gun case and you're not there, they can use their master key. Otherwise, they'll have to get you to open it OR cut the locks off.

That was going to be my suggestion. I bought a new Pelican last summer for a hunting trip and was VERY pleased w/ it. Best price I found at the time was on Amazon.

That does look like a nice case, I think I will swing by Academy today and check it out. And no the locks are supposed to be non-TSA so that only you can open it.

1860, last June I went on a hunting trip to CA by way of Reno. Our party of 4 hunters had 5 rifles and 3 pistols between us. My best advice is to READ all the regs, both the TSA as well as those for your specific airline; the airlines have regs in addition to, and sometimes different from, the TSA. Specifically, find out:
Can you pack ammo in the locked case w/ your pistol or does the ammo need to be packed away from the pistol?
How much ammo you can carry.
If the only gun you're carrying is the Shield, I would pack it in it's locked case, then pack the locked case inside one of your checked bags; if possible, secure the locked case to the inner hardware of your luggage w/ a piece of aircraft cable. Doing this should provide you an extra layer of security. Be very calm and low key during the check in process. The TSA rep will ask you to witness while he looks at your firearm. Arrive at the airport earlier than you usually would. Put an ID tag on the outside AND inside of your gun case. Be sure you have multiple keys for the locks, including one w/ whoever's traveling w/ you.
Finally, be aware of the laws of the state/town you're flying in to, especially how to legally transport a handgun in a vehicle. Most states are not as "gun friendly" in this regard as LA.
