Down-sea she tracked straight, and we hit a top speed of 38 knots as we ran across the sea tops.

The custom boats are a lot lighter and faster than the production boats. Some of them claim a 40 KNOT cruise Cest La Vie

Bayliss are absolutely gorgeous vessels.

So on a rig of that size how do overnight or week long excursions go.

Do you have your own capt? Isn't there a size requirement for having a captain and crew aboard?

Does someone have to be at the wheel at all times?

It's a length thing.

When we ran sportfishers the rule of thumb for us was anything over 50' and we'd need a full-time captain and one DH. They are employed year round.

Under 50' you can get away with self if you are willing to work.

The 60' Hat I used to fish for years was cleaned tower to cockpit weekly and after every trip. It was waxed monthly(the fricking gnats in Venice loved this ). Oil changes were fun as well.

Depending on how much you fish maintenance can get crazy. Just fuel for one overnighter usually ran in the $5,000 range. Bait/tackle $1,000. Alcohol $1,000, etc. It helps if either the captain or the DH is a certified CAT mechanic as well.

On overnighters there is always a watch at the helm. Most of the time we are fishing anyway so there are a few people up all night intermittently. This is handled by captain, DH, guests, whoever.

Usually the owner/guests handle DH duties while fishing to help out. The reason you need a DH on staff is when you are not fishing. On a boat over this size the captain can't handle the upkeep himself. Also traveling captains (captains willing to take the boat anywhere the owner wants to go) are a whole different story.

No, it has beefed up engines and customs are lighter.

Our Hatt was one of the fastest out the marina in the upper 30 knot range. I think we hit 40 on the river a ouple times. But we had custom afternarket CATs put in it.

Vikings are some of the fastest "standard " yachts. But the faster you go the wetter the ride.

Even if I was given a boat like that, I could probably only afford to take it out once a year.

Yeah, everyone of these guys that own these pretty much also own companies and use the boat as a closing tool to make deals.

On an overnighter in the Mississippi canyon I witnessed a close on a project with 8 zeros attached to the number.

They love fishing platforms that have the name of their company plastered all over them

1,622 gals. cap.

And an overnighter in the canyon out of Venice where we troll all day, swordfish all night, and troll all the next day.

We burn just about every drop.

Granted port of call changes price. Shorter run out of Pirate's Cove on GI or Port Aransas, TX.

ETA: thank God it wasn't my credit card

there isn't a requirement for you to be a licensed captain if you own the boat. if you are going to charge someone to be their captain then you would have to have a license. That boat will have a captain and probably 2 crew full time and in tournament situations maybe up to 4 crew unless the owner/family likes to work hard.
