I have an 870 Express I got as a graduation present back in 1990. It was/is my primary duck gun. It's had some wear and tear on it to the coating (I think it's parkerized but definitely not blued). There's some spots where there is some surface rust that isn't pitted but more like stained and there are some spots where the coating has been worn off....probably from rubbing on stuff behind my seat when I was in college.

My question is: What would be the best coating to go back with on it. I don't need any fancy colors or anything, just something to cover up the worn spots and the rust stains.

TIA.

Same thing happened to me. Go with cerakote, you wont be disappointed. If you are anywhere near Baton Rouge I would strongly suggest Lews Firearms in Gonzales, he does great work.

Take a look at Birdsong Black T. They do awesome work and don’t just cover the rust. I had my dads old Model 700 done by them about 5 years ago. It looks like the day he got it. My son hunts with it now since dad has passed. The finish has held up very well. They are as good as it gets .
They are just out of Jackson Mississippi.

Check out Carolina custom hydrographix. They do a lot of the coatings for browning and other manufacturers. The owners name is Tad, super nice guy. Just sent one of my kids guns there to be done

I’ve got 4 done by birdsong, the first being an 870 around 20yrs ago. It’s held up great and I would highly recommend birdsong to anyone looking for a weatherproof coating.

Rob Robertson is perhaps the best. Check out his website. Very very friendly people as well. Good luck!

Call Remington and see if and how much it would cost to get redone.

What ever he does this is not an option, the coating from the 80s/90s is better than anything they have turned out since . I have seen new remmys on the rack with a good layer of surface rust.
Cerakote is the right answer

Did not know that, it’s tragic that a lot of manufacturers have the “ don’t give a dam” attitude nowadays.

Does anyone have any idea on the quality of Remington's work on these sorts of things? Other areas of Remington's quality is suspect everywhere you read.
