Just think how worn out we would be if every time the neighbors wife passed gas we were running over there to see if she wanted some

That green caterpillar turns into a Regal moth that’s orange and yellow. It’s a silk moth too that won’t live but a week like the Cecropia.

Think I saw one of those our farm awhile back.

yes that’s the other large native silk moth. Both moths are seen so infrequently that the experience higgy and his son have had with this is pretty amazing. They only live two weeks, their caterpillars are eaten by damn near everything, and they spend most of their life cycle far removed from sight.

very awesome

Same here last one I saw was at our farm back in August. We have an overhang on our shop with two highbay lights we leave on at night and it attracts a lot of moths.

Read up on memory retention of moths from the caterpillar stage through metamorphosis. Its super interesting. A caterpillar basically has a biological meltdown during metamorphosis and turns into soup. Its basically a different organism by the time it turns into a moth, yet studies have found that moths retain some learned behavior from the caterpillar stage.

Must have been the female that came out of cocoon.

Based on the antennae, I’d say your moth was the female and the new arrival the male.

Had one of those luna moths fly up and hit me in the neck while I was walking on my deck.

I ain't gonna lie, I thought I was got, I did some maneuvers that had me sore for a day or 2 trying to get away from whatever the hell it was. I never saw it until after the shenanigans.

Not sure how it survived those sub freezing temps we had. I imagine it has some type of natural antifreeze.

Sure enough I had a male Cecropia on my sheet last night. I only get one or two a year. Moths species usually hatch out at the same time.
