Am I seeing things, or is there ice in that cooler? So you put him on ice, then let him go?

Dumped it out before. I kept him on ice for 2-3 mins while deciding whether or not to kill it (for pond owner) and when I decided I'd throw it in the bayou, I dumped the ice for transport. He looked fine from what I could tell.

When that size, how do you tell alligator from spotted?

The spotted gar I've seen are pretty easy to see that they're spotted. The coloration is pretty different between the 2

the ones I mainly deal with aren't spotted, needlenose, or alligator. is there just a river gar, or is it some kind of hybrid?

mouth like the middle below, but not as needly and a bit shorter.. similar to the one in OP, but definitely not needlenose, spotted, or alligator.

eta: unless needlenoses start to taper as they increase in size.
can't find a good pic.

The ones with spots ARE the alligator garfish. The ones without, we always called Needlenose.

I would LOVE to have that thing loose in my pond! I have 15 bazillion bream that have completely taken over. I actually considered catching a couple gar at a place I know at Indian Creek and turning 'em loose to "thin the herd" a little bit!

But we have a gar, with spots, called The Spotted gar, and he is not The Alligator Gar. Lepisosteus oculatus vs. Atractosteus spatula.

Oh hell, I did not know that. I'm not even sure what the real name of the "needle-nose" is but thought only the alligator gar had spots.

Sorry and I stand corrected.
