Catfish can, freon bottles amount with residential license?

Called LDWF yesterday, because in years past, I had a gear license and commercial license. I do not sell my catch and do it just to keep my freezer full for the year. The lady there told me I do not need a gear license any longer. So I asked her about the commercial license and was told I wouldn’t need that either since I don’t sell my catch. I asked if there was an amount of cans that could be used with the residential license and was told that there was but couldn’t tell me the amount. If I am above the given amount, she says I will need a gear and commercial licenses though.

Can you explain what any of this means?
I’m not criticizing, just curious I attempt to catch fish with a rod & reel.

I don’t think there’s a limit? There’s a TON of them in Des Allemends every Spring.

There's a limit on catfish boxes and slat traps which are the same thing. But yea you can string together 100 if you want to.

Take a Freon bottle and cut a hole at top of bottle for fish to lay eggs in. Cut hole at bottom of bottle to allow water to drain out. Catfish lay eggs in can when they spawn.

Can you link or cite the law that limits you to 5?

NM. There's no limit on cans and drums.

freon bottles
I watched Stalecracker running freon bottles on youtube, looked like a pain in the arse and a mess from mud etc etc.
But he was catching them
I'd get a slat trap, less trouble.

Jeremy Gremillion and Ray Ramagos both make their catfishing bottles from emptied, metal, 30-pound R-22 refrigerant bottles. Gremillion gets his from friends who do residential cooling work. Ramagos noted that they can also be purchased from scrap yard dealers.
1) Using a hammer and punch, pierce the bottom of the bottle to make sure that no pressure is trapped in it. Then, using either the punch or an acetylene torch, make three additional holes in the bottom. These holes are to allow water to drain from the bottle when it’s being raised.
2) Turn the bottle upright and cut an oval hole on its upper shoulder with an acetylene torch. Gremillion prefers his hole to have a 3-inch vertical opening and a 5-inch horizontal opening.
The size of the hole determines the size of the fish that will use it. “I don’t like bigger holes because they catch bigger fish, and I like the taste of smaller fish better,” he explained.

3) Tie a small rope or heavy cord suitable for the water depth to both of the handles so the bottle comes straight up when it is being retrieved. Alternatively, the cord may be tied to the bottle’s small central valve.
Tie your float of choice to the other end of the line. Gremillion uses floats cut from swimming pool noodles, but cautions that the floats must be changed every year so they don’t deteriorate. “A lost float is a lost bottle.”

My buddy uses 5 gallon metal paint cans (he gets them free working in a ship yard) He cuts a hole in the bottom for the fish to go in and smashes the other end shut. It doesn't seal so it also allows the water to drain. He probably has 200 cans. Runs them about twice a year and has enough catfish for his entire family. Only drawback is its really messy.

Does he have a commercial license or just uses a residential license?

He has a rec license, he doesn't sell his fish. I don't think there is a limit for cans. There is a limit of 5 for hoop nets, slat traps and wire nets.

Thank y’all. I have never seen that up here in the Mecca. Learned something new today.

Rig a big dip net so it’s hanging over the side the boat like a basketball goal. Dump the cans straight into the net. When it gets to much fish in it dump the net straight into the ice chest. Very little mess if any

The mess comes if you decide to move the can line and gotta put all that in the boat
