I don't know if it's because of the difference in the soil here and where yall live or if it's because of the colder winters? But yeah, I'm very familiar with fire ants. I'm originally from south Alabama. In some ways, this is heaven. We don't have the duck hunting or all the water that yall have, but, we don't have the water mocs, scorpions, hogs, and skeeters, either. We do have mothers-in-law, though.

I have heard that cotton insecticide is responsible for killing of most catalpa worms. Since there are many trees nowhere near cotton fields, i do not quite buy it, but maybe any agricultural insecticide wipes them out. I have not seen any in years either, and there are trees all over Cenla, especially along Hwy 107 btw Ruby and Marksville.

You are lucky. Around here if you drop a hotdog weenie anywhere there are fire ants on it in 3 minutes or less. I don't know how any baby turkeys survive. I know a slow-crawling catalpa worm doesn't stand a chance.

I agree. There ain't a cotton field within 250 miles from me. There are a lot of tobacco fields, though, and tobacco has to be sprayed for tobacco worms. But catalpa worms don't get on tobacco. I just miss havin catalpa worms to fish with. (We always called em "kuh-taw'-bee" worms)

Agreed. Fire ants are the #1 problem.
Alex's timeline would make sense since the state stopped poisoining ants about 30 years ago. Well I'm guessing 30. My grandfather used to work for state and I remember a program.

from what i remember someone saying, you needed a sandy type soil for the caterpillars. i think they burrow/nest/etc. in that loose soil.

years back, we had a tree just off of a beach, and it'd be loaded every year.

My dad used to have a friend in S'port that had a tree in his yard that was loaded every yeat. We would go pick them in May and freeze bags of them to Catfish with on Cross Lake.

We wound up getting a tree and planting it in our pasture. It was there for 10 years and never got worms on it.

Why do you want a tree with worms? What do they do?

do you fish or just hunt? they are the absolute BEST catfish bait in the world! No comparison, you let them get big and pick them and freeze them in some corn meal "there are other ways" thaw out some every time you hit the river or your catfish pond and you will catch catfish like never before FREE BAIT!

I really just shoot. I hunt when I can, but I can count on one hand how many times Ive been, and I dont even need fingers to tell you how much Ive actually killed.

I have fished a crap ton more than hunted, but never for catfish like yall do up north. Only thing I know about catfish is the stinkier the bait the better.

Makes sense though. Free bait is always good.
