Some of the guys on rokslide have been doing really cool kimber builds. I think they've been getting them as light as 4.5 pounds naked.

Easiest, and cheapest, is to build a savage. Buy a used rifle cheap, buy barrel nut wrench and go, no-go gauges. Pick a pre fit barrel, stock, and trigger if not happy with adjusting factory one. Only tool needed is a vice. I've swapped barrels on mine a few times, and there's really nothing to it. Like previous poster said look at Northland shooters supply for a barrel. Get This for an action wrench and barrel nut wrench. Northland carries upgraded barrel nuts and recoil lugs as well as go no-go gauges plus some Savage take off Accufit Accustocks among other things. Should be able to come in around 1000.00 or so minus optics and have a half MOA shooter. The Accustocks are nice. Full aluminum bedding block and spacers for comb height and length of pull.

Custom action: $1000-$1500
Prefit barrel: $750-$1000+
Stock: $275-$1400
Trigger: $125-$250
Bottom metal: $125-$275

ETA: Old Mausers are rock solid and can be found cheap. Find one with a good action and bolt, get it rebarreled and headspaced then build the rest however you'd like. There are plenty of aftermarket stocks and other parts.

Id like to build a lightweight .308 to hunt with

The big difference from an AR you’re likely to run into is you can shop around and put together a better gun with what you want for a comparable or even lower cost to a production gun whereas with bolt guns you don’t really get a discount for putting it together yourself and a lot of what’s out there is geared towards premium builds. If you just happen to have a good donor action laying around or just want a project go for it, but manufacturing has gotten really good to the point it’s pretty easy to throw a rock and hit a lightweight 308 that’ll shoot MOA or less these days with just about any combination of features you want. Not to say you shouldn’t do it, but a lot of people building custom guns are doing it to achieve something they can’t buy, whatever that may be. From scratch, it’s pretty hard to stay under $2000, and that will buy you a really nice factory gun.

Yes, I hunt with a guy that makes some beautiful guns. The made one with a blonde Birds Eye maple stock that is gorgeous.

My Montana is sub-5 naked. 6.8 with can and Zeiss scope. I love it.

To the OP, depending on how light you are talking, a diy is likely not your best option. You’ll want to start with a light action, like a Kimber or NULA.

I built this rifle around 2003, picture is of the same age ... 20+ yrs ago. Sako P94 action, Lilja select match grade barrel, Jewel 12 ozs. trigger, Stith tiger stripe maple stock, Titanium scope rings, chambered in 17 HMR. Such a blast to shoot.

Could also build off a tikka if you’re just trying to tinker
-stainless tikka - $750
-krg bravo - $350
-prefit barrel - $700
-sell the old stock and barrel for $200
-can get the bolt fluted and the barreled action cerakoted for pretty cheap if you want to make it fancy

Can one do a Tikka conversion like w/ Savage, "Howage" and "Remage"? If so, who offers prefit barrels and barrel nut?

Go check out rokslide i was listening to one of the most recent podcast this morning on the way to work and they had a guy who had did a thread and article on building a tikka. He listed all rhe components he used and detailed what he did.
