Like you can with the AR15's? I don't care about it being registered or whatnot. Just watching want to build a hunting rifle from scratch, if possible

from scratch, yes, but that's gonna require a good bit of tooling and knowledge. However, there are plenty of people selling components like actions, barrels, stocks, etc. if you want to try you hand at piecing one together.

Yes. Sorry, that's what I meant. Want to build it from components. Any recommendations of manufacturers?

Easier than building an AR. I’m fixing to build a 7prc for target shooting and have a spare chassis/barrel for a lightweight hunting rifle as well. Building it on a Lone Peak Fuzion long action. Will be my 3rd Fuzion action and I love every one of them. If you really want to cut weight you can get actions without full length integral scope rails, or if you want to drop the money there are titanium actions. I rather stick with a full steel action and maybe try to cut a couple ounces somewhere else.

I think you’d just need a barrel vise, rent some go-no go gauges, and an internal action and torque wrench. It’s expensive but I don’t believe it’s overly complicated with the amount pre fits available on the market

I have a 350 legend, 450 bushmaster, 6.5 creedmore and 6.5 Grendel all built on ar platforms. It is incredibly easy and loads of fun to build and ar platform rifle.

Here is what it will likely cost you:

Custom action: $1000-$1500
Prefit barrel: $750-$1000+
Stock: $275-$1400
Trigger: $125-$250
Bottom metal: $125-$275

I’ve built 3.

1st was a Bighorn Origin action (now Zermatt)
Criterion barrel with savage barrel nut
Triggertech trigger
Magpul stock
It shoots around a 1/3” group at 100yds.

Did 2 with Remington 700 actions that I sent off to get blue printed and timed.
Put Criterion barrels on both Remage barrel nut
Triggertech triggers
Mapgul stocks

I bought most of the components from Northland shooters Supply.
Call them and tell them what you’re wanting to do and he will help you out.

Have you gotten hands on the MDT HNT26 chassis?

I really like the idea of it, but it's an expensive chassis.

I have several Manners chassis drop-in stocks. Have 5-6 Kelbly stocks that are pillar & glass bedded

Could also build off a tikka if you’re just trying to tinker
-stainless tikka - $750
-krg bravo - $350
-prefit barrel - $700
-sell the old stock and barrel for $200
-can get the bolt fluted and the barreled action cerakoted for pretty cheap if you want to make it fancy

I plan on using the MDT HNT 26 chassis, folding stock. You can get Proof prefits for much less than $700. Exceeds any required accuracy for hunting. If you don’t want the expensive HNT26 they may still be running their Black Friday sale, the Oryx was only around $300. Can use aics mags with no bottom metal. Magazines were 40% off too.

Yes. Lots of avenues to doing this. Headspacing the barrel is the only real gunsmithing involved. You can do that by either getting an action that accepts prefit barrels (tikka or a boutique action) or a savage nut style barrel (basically any push feed action).

Otherwise, get the stock you want, trigger you want, etc. It's easier than doing an AR.

If you have a basic understanding of rifles and gunsmithing, it's not a hard DIY project, depending on how complicated you want it to be. It's the type of project where your can spend as much as you want to, but you can get an accurate gun w/o spending your child's college fund. I've "built" 3 myself. The first two used a Stevens Model (cheap Savage action prior to the Axis) chambered in 270 Win. I bought a barrel wrench from Midway, used the factory "tupperware" stock, rented go/no go headspace gauges ($10/week), bought a custom barrel (McGowen for the 221 Fireball and Shilen for the 20 Practical), bought "bench rest" magazine blocks, bought 223 Rem sized bolt heads and used a vice and barrel nut wrench I already had. I used the factory barrel nut and recoil lug for the 221, but used custom (Northland) barrel nut and recoil lug for the 20 Practical. I also "built" a 20 VarTarg handgun using a Howa Mini-action donor in 223 Remington. I had to get a gunsmith to remove the Howa barrel. I bought a separate chassis type stock for it from JTAC Industries. None of the guns had any gunsmith work done on the action or bedding. Accuracy wise, they all shoot 0.5-0.6" groups of three when I do my part. There are a LOT of good YouTube videos that are very helpful. What caliber are you looking for? What will be the gun's use?

You could that with a beat up Savage (either 308 or 223 type bolt head since you can change bolt heads w/ a $30 part and 10 min of work) or Remington Model 700 (308 size bolt head). The conversion using the Savage barrel nut is not that difficult. Of course, one can also do the same thing w/ a M700 (referred to as a "Remage") or Howa ("Howage" conversion). A number of custom barrel makers offer prechambered barrels so all you have to do is screw on the barrel, screw on the barrel nut, set the headspace and tighten everything up. Easy enough to find a replacement stock if you want to. Keep us updated w/ the project. If you're going to use the gun next hunting season, start putting the parts together now.
