I was thinking of going hunt the south end up Kisatchie around Woodworth and Forest Hills. I was planning on taking a tent and camping out for the weekend since it is about a 1.5 hour drive for me.

How is the camping up there? Do they have pretty good sites if any? Asking the OB is step 1 in my research so please forgive me if there is a ton on google. I like to hear it from the horses mouth as well as read around.

I've heard it's mostly pine woods with some hardwood bottoms. I plan on finding water and starting my search around there.

edit: Loran camp and trailhead came up first thing on google. Seems to be the right general area for me.

Yes, I have no idea about the camping there, but jiffy's advise is sound. I had to try a case in the tribal court for the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, and I got a ticket on 165 on the way there.

The area you are talking about is the old Camp Claiborne. We have been camping and riding side by sides and 4-wheelers up there for years. The Loran/trailhead campground is pretty nice and has individual campsites with a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern pole. There are also pit toilets at 2 locations in the campground. Cost to camp is $3.00 per campsite per night I think and there is a self-check station. Keep in mind that most people, if not everyone else, there will be riding the trails on dirt bikes, 4-wheelers, and side by sides and vehicle width is restricted to no more than 50". All that being said, we have been riding the trails and have seen people wearing hunter's orange in the woods off of the trail who I assume were hunting.

You may try that Claiborne route. I hunt around Woodworth and I've never seen campgrounds. They're more worried about bicycle trails than hunters. There is plenty of land though, and it's not far from 112 (Camp Claiborne). Good luck.

Just wanted to be sure that I won't get robbed by crack heads camping out there. Thanks for the info!

If I was going to do this I'd go off of Messina Rd south of Twin Bridges Rd (488). Go in a mile or so and look for a way to get down to your right. There's a creek bottom down there and you could literally stay there for a month off the grid without anyone knowing. It's beautiful in there and as long as you didn't get lost you'd have a great time.

You can camp anywhere on the Wild Azalea Trail. There's marked camping sites with vehicle parking at Valentine Lake, Kinkaid Lake, which are both run by the forest service and are paid camping sites, and off Messina Rd. at the Wild Azalea Seep which is primitive with outhouses. You could always camp at Indian Creek in Woodworth, which has RV campsites and primitive camping areas right on the lake. Both areas have bath houses with showers and toilets. I've camped all these areas before, Indian Creek primitive area is awesome if you're tent camping. There are fire rings and trashcans at each campsite, which are spread pretty far apart, and most sites are on the water.

Research that spot. I don't think so. I haven't lived there in years though.

From the Forest Service Website regarding camping along the Wild Azalea Trail:

Campground Camping
Camping is permitted adjacent to the trail, but campsites must be established at least 30 feet away from the trail center line.
Fire Information: Do not build fires on trail.

We camp at the Kincaid Lake area about twice a year. Will be there this weekend matter of fact. I have seen a couple boy scout groups camping near the trail in years past while riding my bike.

This area is part of Alexander State Forest which is a state ran WMA. Good hunting in this area. I like the southern part near the fish hatchery.

Can you use ATV's while hunting, or only in the designated ATV trails?

I normally hunt north mississppi. It's tough to drive 6 hours every weekend to hunt. I want a close place where I can go camp out for a weekend that is far enough to where the ole lady can't call and ask me to head home over some bull shite. Kisatchie is the perfect distance lol
