Camper owners: is owning a camper worth it?

Wife (no pic) wants a camper. I don’t see us using it enough for the price and trouble of it all. We are both about 5 years away from retirement.

Buy a used one after Corona and see if y’all like it. I don’t think it would be for me unless I was retired and I like road trips

I just saw an ad on this forum where you can rent it out for 1000 a week when you’re not using it.
I’d also recommend a trailer. My fil wants a camper van but he will only use it twice per year.

Well, it's not just the cost of the camper to consider. Depending on how big a camper being bought will determine how big a truck you will need to tow it.
Do you go all out with a dually with a 5th wheel, big towing package, fuel eating V-8 or turbo diesel engine?
Friend of mine bought a camper many years ago thinking his pickup would be sufficient to tow it and on his second trip he found out otherwise. So then in addition to the price of the camper, there was the cost of a new heavy duty truck to pull the damn thing.
Unless you're talking about an all in one mobile camper and not a pull-behind. Can you store it safely when not in use. How much is it going to cost to insure?

Good points. I have a GMC AT4 1500. Another reason I don’t want to pull a med sized camper

its no different then a boat, if you use it regularly then its very worth it, if you dont then its a money pit taking up space in your driveway
and its a better investment to find a well kept used one vs buying new, let the other guy buy new and you reap the rewards of not paying twice what its worth

We have family with a camper, they use it a lot but we have visited them at some of the camp sites and it is like a redneck motel 6. I couldn't imagine wanting to stay there. We stay in it when we visit, they do live a rocks throw from the beach in Mississippi. I will be taking advantage of this with the flounder migration in about a month. I would not want to own one, it is OK for a night or two, but other than that I would rather a hotel/camp to stay at. Now if you are talking about one of these $100K plus monstrosities, those might be more livable, but they no longer remain a camper at that point.

Depends, if you use it yes.
We have one and try to use it at least 2 times a month.
We only go on weekends but we have fun.
State parks are nice and alot of the private campground have lots of activities for all ages.
If you get one id suggest learning how to fix things as much as possible ypurself because it will break and it will cost alot to get it fixed by a dealer and likely sit there for months before the touch it.
All in all we would do it again because we like have our own toilet to shite in and would rather stay in a more outdoorsy place than a hotel.

Easily a camper by far. It has everything a house has that could go wrong but made in miniature and marked up sky high. A boat is expensive, but has way less stuff to break.

Do you have a free place to store it OP? It would absolutely not make sense to buy one if you have to pay $100/ month to store it.
As said, rent one. It’s fun if you can go and stay at state parks and other places where campground fees are reasonable, weather is nice, and you can do cheap weekend get aways. But financially you’d be better off renting a cabin many times.

Used camper market is great if you have cash, most campers sold are financed, many at ridiculus loan terms, tons of owners find they dont use them much, dont want to make the payments, and will sell for the loan balance.

I've only been to two campgrounds that were really appealing. One on the north shore of Lake Superior at Black Beach adjacent to Silver Bay. One in Seward Alaska fronting on Resurrection Bay. Most folks were laid back looking to have some cold ones and cook meat/fish over open fire. The rest of 'em can get a bit loud.
As others have said, strongly consider renting one as a trial.
