Calling OB Mountain Men - Firearm Selection

I’m going on a trip in two weeks to Jackson Hole for my honeymoon. I’m planning on bringing my M&P9 (in a locked, TSA-approved pelican case) but am curious if you’d advise I bring something larger like a 44 mag. I obviously don’t have plans to hunt but I’ll be out in the sticks on nature trails and such.
TIA
TIA

9 mm is plenty to wound your new wife enough for you to get away from the threat

If you are looking for an excuse to buy a 44 mag or something similar. Of course you need to buy a new gun!

I'd say stick with the side arm you're most comfortable with. Put a small bell on your belt. Let's critters know you're around and most will just avoid you.

I’d be borrowing a Redhawk from a friend but you can bet your bottom dollar I want one!

45 and 44 mag are not in the same league power-wise. Would rather bring serious horsepower if someone who lives in the mountains suggests I should.

that would make me want to buy a Ruger blackhawk .45 colt with a Henry Original Rifle in .45 colt to match it.

what on earth do you think you'll need a large caliber handgun for?

If you are worried about bear buy bear spray when you get there because you can't fly with it much easier and more useful than carrying a gun.

.45 + p ammo is still a helluva lot better than 9. .45 would still give you more rounds than redhawk and a semi auto with extra magazine to boot.

Could you just use a .45 with Lehigh penetrators?

I don't think you are supposed to fly with bear spray at all. My dad just got back from yellowstone. He was allowed to check bear spray at the air port in laffy but coming back it was a big deal and he had to get rid of the bear spray to check his bag. I guess the laffy TSA agents don't deal with it enough to know it isn't allowed.

Plus, you can't legally discharge a firearm in Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Parks. You might be able to throw it at a bear, but you can't fire it....

Well that’s part of what I’m asking - should I be concerned about bear if I’m not planning on going off the beaten path? That’s why I wanted to consult the northern guys in here. If there isn’t much of a concern I’ll just bring my M&P that I always travel with.

Yes. There was one roaming around the fishing bridge campground the last time I was in Yellowstone.

Whats funny is it is illegal to discharge a fire arm within most city limits. But police are thinking about that after a self defense incident.

Bear Spray. If it was me, I would have a Glock 20 loaded with some hot loads (buffalo bore). Great for 4 legged and 2 legged threats. But yeah, Bear Spray is your best non-lethal option.

Another vote for Glock 20 for a wilderness sidearm. It's alot like comparing a 9/.40/.45 pistol to a .357 revolver for human threats IMO. The capacity, follow-up shots and quick reloads are going to matter more than energy leaving the barrel.
