I'm a bit of a boating newbie. I got a 21.5 foot deck boat I like to fish out of. Can any of you provide some insight to a cajun anchor (brand, length, material, effectiveness in holding in a decent tide,Etc... that yall like .
I'd like to avoid spending over $1000 on a power pole

The only Cajun anchor I’ve ever used was with my dads boat but it is a 17’ aluminum, so pretty light. The anchor works flawlessly in shallow water though. I think it’s 5’ steel.

Last year we threw it down but forgot to tie it to the boat lol. Came back a few months later at low tide and the damn thing was still there and we retrieved it.

Do you throw it down pretty hard like a spear?

I have a couple I made at work 1 inch schedule 160 stainless. I can anchor my 21 ft bay boat in 6 ft of water with it. I almost couldn't pull it up a couple times.
You will have to let out enough line so that the boat pulls against the anchor instead of parking on top of it.

Yeah you just jab it straight down. Doesn’t take a lot of force to stick in the mud.

I made this for my boat. Spent about $50 total. Bought a 10’ 3/4” fiberglass rod from gamut.com for around $40. Used an adjustable flag pole holder to mount to the boat. Made the extention pole out of 3/4” pvc. I also drilled a small hole in the T and put a paddle screw to hold the pole in place.

They sell them at Academy for $80. It's just not worth it to make one, especially stainless. It not quite to deploy but extremely useful and most popular anchor in Louisiana.

The quiet cheap alternate to powerpole/talon is a stickit pin. This is about $150 for pole and bracket.

I find the cajun anchors work better than the stick it pins. OP, you need to throw it but not hard, and it needs to be straight up and down.

I ordered 25 3/4 by 10 ft tree stakes and made marsh anchors for 15 bucks each. Pvc T and 2 caps for a handle. Apoxied them on the fiber glass rod. Kept 5 and sold 20 at work for 35 each. No way would I pay 150 for that

Attach a float to the very end of the line. My dad cuts in half the round kind you generally see on crab traps.

its basically a stainless steel rod you spear into the ground by throwing it. the suction of the soft muck in the marsh bottoms lets it hold very well but steady wave action will pull it out in open water areas.

its more suited for insure protected areas where you want a simple easy to deploy and retrieve anchoring system that wont dirty your boat with an anchor full of clingy mucky mud stuck to it you have to wash off each time you use it.

a 22ft boat should have a variety of anchoring systems at the ready that include regular anchor, a cajun anchor, and a power pole (preferably 2 power poles)

if you have the power poles you really dont need the others but you should have an emergency back up anchor just in case you lose power and PP wont work

no, that is how you cause issues retrieving it, just use normal effort like you are using a flounder gig and that is all the force you need

had a friend throw one hard and it went 90% into the mud, it took us 20 minutes of pulling on it to get it back out and we ended up having to pull it out with the boat motor so it got bent

I have a 25' bay boat and when fishing for reds like to anchor my boat both in the front and rear. The power pole takes care of the rear and for years used the cajun anchor for the front. It worked with mixed results. If I had wind or current the anchor would come loose and I would have to stick it again and sometimes a third time. I know my boat is too large for what it was designed for so I went looking for something else.

A stick it pole was suggested by a friend so I bought a 10'. Since using it I haven't touched my cajun anchor. It has worked without any issues and much prefer it over the cajun anchor. I don't use any brackets with the stick it. The bracket would be nice to have when the water is flat calm but on days when it isn't might be a problem.

I made one out of a grounding rod from Home Depot, rigged as pic below...works great, used a pvc pipe tied to side of boat as a storage sleeve.

Yep like suggested buy a ground rod, cut in half and now you have two cajun anchors for a whole lot less than you will pay for a single one at the store, takes about 10 minutes to cut the rod in half and drill a hole in each for a shackle.
