I know you can't buy a handgun there unless you have it shipped to your FFL or you are an LA resident, but what about rifles (bolt action hunting) for an out of state visitor?
Also, would an out of stater pay LA sales tax on the rifle?

Same. Must go through an FFL.
I only buy used so I don't know about the tax thing and I don't need to go through FFL.

I’ve bought rifles out of state before and driven home with them. Not sure the rule on every state but I’m pretty sure you’re good to go in Louisiana.
I bought a tikka in SC when I lived in NC.

You can walk into Bowie’s and buy a shotgun or rifle as a Texas resident go hunt with it and drive back to Texas with no issues.
You can not do this with a pistol and it will need to be shipped to an FFL.
My brother from Texas bought a 10/22 takedown and we walked out the store with it and went gator hunting.

No, this isn't right.
you can buy long guns out of state.
What I'm not sure about is whether the state you buy from must touch the state you live in. That used to be the case but not sure about now.

Out of state can buy long guns across the counter just as a Louisiana resident would, out of state can't buy a pistol across the counter.

In November, I bought a rifle from Bass Pro in Bossier and I live in Arkansas. It took a little time to get the paperwork completed, but they were very experienced with the process. I'm sure Simmons is as well.
