So,for about the past 2-3 weeks I've been searching for a 16'jon boat to be able to fish some small local canals and creeks.
I've searched Craigslist, Facebook and La Sportsman classifieds and a few others.

There is an abundant amount of boats for sale like I'm looking for but very few of them have paperwork.

How do I register a boat and trailer with nothing but a bill of sale?

You’ll be sorry, don’t do it. Royal, and I mean major Royal pain in the arse. If you can even get it done

Exactly what I was thinking.

I bought a pontoon boat a few years ago in Ms that was registered in Virginia. Took a while to get everything registered in La and paperwork in hand.

With out a complete paper trail of ownership for the trailer you will not get a “valid” trailer license unless you convince a Trooper to stamp it as homemade. Took me over a year.

There is another way, if you have a bill of sale a Justice of the Peace can issue a document and then you can take that to the DMV and they will issue a title.

My advice would be to speak with a JP before hand, present your case, and let them tell you how they would rule on it. If the JP tells you they can't help you then walk away

Keep looking for one that says paperwork in hand. It's not worth the headache.

If you know a state trooper the trailer issue will not be an issue. My trailer was 19 y/o and the previous owner never registered it in his name. I went to the troopers office and was out of there in 10 min then went to DMV and got my plate. That easy. Whole process was done in less than an hour. May have to doctor up the trailer a bit but if done right it’s very easy.

I bought a 21ft sailboat a few years back, and all the previous owner had to give was the last 3 bills of sale. He said didn't register the boat when it moved to LA from out of state because "he was just lazy."

Well...I went through more shite trying to get that fricking boat registered. It even took weeks for me to track down sufficient documentation just to pay the fricking taxes now required on used boat sales thanks to our great governor. It was one of the reasons I ended up selling it. I even told the guy who bought it the whole story and he said he didn't care and "knew a guy."

Moral of the story - ALWAYS get paper work.

A lot of times VIN’s on trailers are illegible which makes registering them a pain as well. So be sure you can read the VIN on the trailer even if it does have paperwork

If you have to "doctor up the trailer a bit" then you better know that State Trooper well.

Just because you know a state trooper doesn’t mean you can get the trailer stamped. A lot won’t do it just because you ask them. If it’s a manufactured trailer then they won’t lie and stamp it home made just to get you some paperwork.
