Broke down in Alabama

A good friend was on his way to Atlanta and broke down in Eutaw, Alabama. He drives a 2009 GMC Sierra. The dash lights came started flashing on and off along with the gauges. Pulls over and truck dies. It will start, runs like shite and sounds like it is knocking. Only the check engine light is on.
Called Sellers Wrecker and Repair who sent someone out. Ran a diagnostic and pulled up no codes. They are going to tow it to their shop and he is going to rent a vehicle to make his meeting tomorrow.
As of now he plans on towing the truck back to Baton Rouge, I hate to see that bill. Anyone with any advice or suggestions? Anyone know whether or not that shop is reputable? I just want to help him out if I can.

It needs a new throttle body. They were very bad about that. Very cheap and easy as hell to change out.

What makes you say it's a throttle body? How do you test it besides putting a new one on?

I wouldn't think renting a uhaul with a car dolly would cost more than $500.

Cheap code reader available at any parts house . Pull the code then head over to Google to decipher what the code is. Is his "reduced power" message popping up on his dash?

Throttle position sensor, I have replaced 2 in mine. Not the same symptoms he is having but thanks.
Renting the U-Haul sounds like a better option.

No engine reduced power. That is the first thing I asked him.

I think he said the wrecker did the code reader and it didnt pull any codes. You ever heard of that? strange if true.

Yeah used to be you had to change out entire throttle body. Now they make the sensor that is replaceable. If not the throttle body then probably a coil . Fuel pumps are a rarity on those going out.
Is the motor the 5.3 with AFM?

Yep, no codes. It is a 5.3 not sure what AFM is.
The knock in the engine is what make me think it is more than just a sensor. I am no mechanic though.

Bad battery could cause all of that except the engine knock.

afm, active fuel management. cycles between 4 and 8 cylinders.
