Your definition of better isn't necessarily someone elses. Quite frankly, for example, some people couldn't give 2 fricks if the dog's hips last forever and it lives 16 years if it can't retrieve a duck worth a frick.

Nobody is ignoring science. Observation is science as much as a DNA test is. A DNA test cannot tell me how good a dog will tree squirrels, just like observation of one dog can't tell me if it carries doggie aidz.
And yes we were all outdoorsman once. People doing it the way outdoorsman do it got dogs to where they were 50 years ago. People deciding some dogs are sweet and cute got them where they are today.

Well of course, why on earth would you get a hunting dog that isn't proven in the field? Now I bet every hunter that has had a great dog that had to stop bringing him into the field would have liked to get a couple more years out of him.
