In a few words, please define "making the breed better".
Any idea why labs are cancer stricken? Because everyone thinks their lab is the best and is a great hunting dog. They have a friend with a good looking female, and game on. Neither of the two give a shite about genetics.
If they would have been tested, they would have found that their dog has bad hips or prone to cancer and if they have any sense whatsoever, they wouldn't breed. Eventually, those bad genetics disappear and you have the same type of dog that existed 100 years ago without all of the issues

I understand genetics. Have I ever actually studied them no. I raised Purebred cattle growing up and pairing a bull and cow with good genetics is part of the game. You have to have an understanding of it to use it.
Then all of this should make complete sense to you. Why shouldn't the same apply to dogs?

You weren't supposed to notice that

He believes he can get rid of cancer through breeding.
ETA: you might want to study a little oncology while your doing all that learning

Bettering the breed has two fronts. First is genetic and the second is what Downshift is doing.
Here is an example of bettering the breed. I have a Doberman who came from a very good line. AKC registered and all. He is a blue Doberman. Blue Dobermans are prone to a genetic defect called CDA, Color Diluted Alopecia. It causes him to loose his hair. He fits all of the breed standards, but he has lost 50% of his hair. I could breed him and make money off of him, but I chose not to because of the severity of his CDA. I have bettered the breed by NOT introducing a whole line of dobermans with severe cases of CDA.
Make sense?

Sorry to do this, but there are genes that can make you predisposed to develop certain cancers.

Not I. I read and post on many boards. When I got back from lunch, I saw this thread at the top and the guys from the OT had posted in it. An educated guess made me think they were discussing my posts.

Because lots of animals with desirable traits have un-desirable traits. If a animal with great traits has one un-desirable trait it is never suppose to be breed? If that's the case how many animals would we have to breed.
