Boat purchase

What is required when purchasing a boat from Texas . Title? Registration? Bill of sale? Does Louisiana require all 3

Buying from state doesn’t matter. If you’re bringing to Louisiana you need a notarized bill of sale for boat/trailer combo and trailer title. Boats don’t have titles

This is what I did when purchasing mine from Georgia and registering in Louisiana. The state accepted my paperwork without any questions. List the boat and trailer values separate. Minimize value allocation to trailer.

You'll need a r-1331 signed by the seller, bill of sale listing the boat, motor and trailer separately, and title from seller. Some say to have separate bos for trailer and boat/motor. It did not matter for me but definitely have each price separate.

Make sure the seller puts an amount you are comfortable paying taxes on.
Because when you go to register in LA, the LDWF WILL make sure you went to the parish tax collector’s office and you paid the sales tax on it.
I have places in MS and LA and have sold and bought boats all over the Gulf Coast. MS is a fantastic tax shelter for boats. Go bring a MS, AL, FL, or TX boat and get it registered here, they are gonna rape you.
It’s total bullshite too- the boat had the sales tax paid on in the state it was sold in. Private person sells to you in LA, but they're gonna get theirs.

Justy fyi, boats didn't used to have titles.
Some do now, and sometimes they put titles on the motors too.
Mine has both of those, and it's a 2016.

IIRC this is usually the case if it was financed originally. which is probably the case a lot more often now than back in the day given current prices and todays people having a tendency to reach for leverage.

Out of an abundance of caution, get a copy of the seller's driver's license. I cannot remember exactly why, but when I bought a bought from a Ms. resident, I had to have that.

You need a bill of sale for the trailer and a title. Make sure you put like $10 for the sale price of the trailer, you have to pay taxes on that.
For the boat to get it registered you need a notoraized bill of sale
Engines aren't titled or registered in Louisiana, but I think some states do. So if he has a title for the engine I would have him sign it over in the case that you may end up selling it to someone in a state that requires down the line.

Take a look at the title. Depending on the date of the sale, the boat trailer may not have needed to be titled in Texas. If not, the title may show the dealer as owner (typed on the front of the title) with a transfer to the seller on the back (handwritten or typed into the first transfer form). If the title was issued to the seller when they bought it from the dealer, then no problem. But, if the title is the oritinal one issued to the dealer, then you will need a notarized bill of sale from the dealer to the seller in addition to the bill of sale from the seller to you in addition to everything else.
