i love watching the jackasses who dont back up their trailer enough and think they can crank the boat allllll the way to the front and end up popping their crank. ..i used to yell at them and warn them but now i just sit, watch, and chuckle.

Once lived within a stones throw of a boat launch. I was home one morning, in the middle of the week, on the dock, and noticed an aluminum boat ½ full of water floating down the river. I grabbed the boat and tied it to the dock and walked over to the boat launch.

There was a man soaking wet on the ramp that has no idea how he got there. There was no truck and no trailer. It was winter and in the 40’s outside.

Apparently what happened was the man had borrowed his friend’s new truck to launch his boat. As he was putting the boat in the water he noticed that it was still tied down (I don’t remember if it was the bow or the stern.) He got out of the truck to untie the boat, but did not put the truck in park or apply the parking break. The truck door hit him and knocked him down. The bumper got caught on his clothes and drug him into the water, somehow he got free…

It took divers over an hour to find the truck.

I consider myself an experienced outdoors fella, have put in a boat plenty.

However in ONE trip to the boat dock just a few months ago I did the following>in no particular order!

1.) Damn near jackknifed a single axle trailer.
2.) When got to dock realized I had drug safety chain all the way to lake.
3.) Flooded out motor trying to start.
4.) Forgot plug, damn near passed out reaching over the back and putting it in.
5.) Thought bilge was not working, but never turned power switch on.
6.) Coming back to dock, wind blowing like hell, tied it up....still dont know how it came untied, but when I come back down the ramp I see a Skeeter floating out...with NOONE in sight.
7.) Finally had boat towed to me, and put it on trailer too short, and had to back back down and put on correct.

All these things independent (except boat floating off) are simple, but putting them all together, I was lucky to make it out alive.

I was out at the public landing between the I-10 bridges at Butte LaRose when I was in college. Lots of boats out skiing and the sky fell out. The ramp was crowded and everyone hurrying. A guy backed a black Silverado 4x4 down the ramp, opened the door, jumped out and rand around to his boat way down the bank. Left the motor running and apparently it was a standard transmission and forgot to put the brake on. People were yelling at him but he didn't pay any attention. By the time he jumped in his boat to run it over to the trailer, he got to see the cab and front end of the truck go under.

I was with my cousin a few years ago and we were young (prolly 18). He was backing the boat in in his Ford Ranger. He had the door open and was looking out the door. He hit a pole and his door bent all the way back to his front fender.

I have launched boats without plugs, and also tried to back them off a trailer with the straps still attached Also watched a woman almost lose a 3/4ton chevy at a launch. Tires hit the slick stuff and she went into the launch till the bumper touched. Luckily the truck fishtailed off the concrete and the tires caught some traction on some rubble. This is probably the biggest reason I own a 4x4.

Me and friend were in Madisonville when a rich dude and his new boat pulled into the launch. He had two guys with him from the place he had just bought the boat from. The rich guy was in the boat and one of the another guys was directing the other guy backing down the boat into the water. We were sitting on the dock watching and when the boat was in the water you could tell the back end was starting to drop. The rich guy looks at us and says "I don't know shite about boats but I think I'm sinking." They had forgot to put the plug in. Well the guy that was directing down comes running and jumps in the boat and guns it to put it back on the trailer but the guy in the truck had already started to pull out. Needless to say that boat went right onto the concrete.

Went to Spring Bayou to pre-fish. Water had dropped a lot. Part of the dock had been under water.

In my excitement to get in the boat, I was moving a little fast as I got to he level that had been under water. It was slick as owl shite after a light mist. My feet at one point were just as high as my arse. I hit the deck and felt electric shocks run up and down my body. Only about 27 witnesses.

The only good one I have is when my FIL was testing his flare gun after discovering his dry box wasn't so dry (plus they were expired) and a private launch. He probably had never shot one before either.

He launched a flare and while messing with the gun for the second shot, didn't pay attention to where the first one went. He then shot the second one and saw it went in the water. My buddy looks up from whatever he was doing to see the marsh burning...and yells out about it.

He and I jump in the FIL's boat and drop it off the lift to go over there asap to try to put it out. We get there and are using a five gallon bucket in assembly line fashion to fill up from the side of the boat and passing it to toss on the fire as fast as we can. Then my buddy notices the water in the boat was up to his ankles, so we had two major eff ups.

We got the fire out and the boat didn't sink, but there sure was a lot of panic there for about 3-5 minutes. Needless to say, the father in law didn't have anything to say then or since, about forgetting to put the plug in the boat.

Same thing happened to me at Lake End Park on Lake Palourde. I hit the concrete on my elbow then started sliding into the launch. Had to grab the trailer to stop myself. Thought I broke my damn arm. Crocs on green algae covered concrete don't mix.

Go sit out on the deck at Fred's on the Amite and watch people land their boats. Mid to late afternoon is best. Half of them are drunk and the husband/wife teams are the best. 9 out of 10 end up argueing.

Then there was this time.... not really at the boat dock but still pretty bad.

Was searching for decoys that someone had left out overnight in the broken marsh before daylight in the fog. It was about 70 degrees till the sun came up.

Navigated right into a shallow mud flat at a low speed and couldn't see what I was doing (my navigator on the bow was from Alabama and wasn't familiar with LA marsh.) Needless to say we were fairly stuck.... he jumped out to try to push and sunk up to his shoulderblades in slop (not further b/c he held on to the side.) The motor just dug a hole behind us.

Next thing you know, a storm blows in, tide drops out and we look like this boat has wheels. We started in lightweight clothes and dry, and the temp dropped to about 40-45 degrees and started raining. Talk about miserable. We had several people hunting around us try to pull us out, but couldn't get close enough to even throw us a line. They did throw us a jug of bloody marys though.

We got out by means of an airboat, and it took some work to do it with the vacuum on the bottom of the boat and all. That's me in the back looking miserable and my buddy from AL in the front, laughing at me along with the guy who took the picture. The blind is up only to block the wind. No way were we getting anything we shot...

I was 16 y/o with my dads suburban and his wellcraft. Took couple friends skiing and we wuz drinking. When I backed the trailer in to pick up the boat, I left it in reverse and got out the truck. By some miracle, the driver's door got hung up on the pier and stopped the truck from submerging (door was mangled). Had to tie it shut and drive home across the causeway. Not a fun night when pops found out.

I've done this myself a few times but never sunk anything luckily. Taught myself at the age of 14 to launch a boat.

Have seen some husband and wife teams arguing about pullin up/launching the boat. That is funny stuff.

This one time on doe day on a WMA you would check-in at the check in station. This check-in station happened to be at top of the boat ramp where we launched, and hunters were lineup single file to check in before heading off into the woods.

There was this one guy about 6'2 275 at the end of the line waiting to check in, another hunter arrives in hurry with boat in tow to launch his boat, as he drives by this hunter his pole that had is trailer light attached hung this mans overalls and drug him all the way down the boat ramp before anyone could stop him.

Talk about mad S.O.B.
