Better/Easier hunting with a kid: Deer or waterfoul?

I've got a 1 month old and would like to be able to bring him hunting when he's old enough. I love me some fishing and also like hunting but never get to hunt more than on an invited trip hear or there. What would be the easier of the two to start off with and build knowlege over the next few years so that when he's ready, I can feel comfortable bringing him?
For reference, I have no place to deer hunt (ie: family land) and I have a camp in Cocodrie if any of that matters.

I've got a 5 yr old. Brought him deer hunting last year & he did great. Taking him duck hunting for the 1st time this season. I'm thinking that he will enjoy the duck hunting alot more because there is more action. He got bored with deer hunting pretty quick & slept most of the time that we were sitting in the box blind.

Sounds like fishing is a better option. Not much you can teach them about hunting at that age (before 3) that I know of other than start telling them some principles. Hard to bring them in the woods before they listen well.
Now fishing is a different story. My daughter has been using her reel for over a year (3 now). She has been holding a pole since she was old enough to hold anything at all. One thing that works at a young age is to talk it up. They think you know everything and believe everything you say. Now is a good time to teach

hmmm. waterfowl would probably interest a young boy more just because there's more action. however, i'm assuming killing a deer at that age would be awesome for him.

I think deer hunting will afford you more opportunities as duck leases are more limited. Duck hunting requires more skill IMO since you need to know how to call.
I'd try to find a deer lease and put a few box stands up. you can squirrel hunt with him too.
Having said that, he may enjoy duck hunting more bc of all the action; boat riding, calling/working birds, shooting, putting out decoys, etc.
Whatever you do, I'm sure he'll love it.

Mine enjoy going dove hunting. There's plenty of action (hopefully) and they don't have to really sit still or be quiet. I'm taking my 5 year old deer hunting tomorrow, fully prepared for her to spook some deer. Don't set the bar too high, be prepared to go home 5 minutes after you get to where you are going. I remember when my oldest daughter was about 3 I packed lunches, brought her some coloring stuff, bought a sack of crickets in hopes of her catching some bream. After a 30 minute drive and a 20 minute boat ride she was ready to go home 5 minutes later after catching one fish.

Coon, if possible, take him squirrel hunting, with or without a dog... ask around and find a small patch of woods you can get to quick and kill some. youngsters like action.. i did that with my boys and my pow pow taught me to hunt with a good squirrel dog.

My 4 year old nephew went Dove hunting this year. I think Dove hunting is the best option. Warm weather, middle of the day, silence and movement aren't an issue. But between deer and ducks...I'd say ducks...

I would say ducks, but keep in mind that some of the blinds and hunting situations are going to be tough on a kid. Pit blinds and layout blinds are going to make things hard, and I'm not sure I'd even try a layout blind for a long time, but the last few seasons that's what we've had to use to consistently kill ducks. Doves are probably the easiest to start a kid bird hunting as there is lots of action, no freezing weather, and open areas to hunt. I know when I was a kid I didn't like deer hunting, and still won't pass up a chance at a day at the duck lease for a deer hunt.

Start off with squirrels and rabbits and move up to the harder stuff.

My little boy went dove hunting first when he was 2. Took him on his 1st duck hunt last year. I'm not a deer hunter so the choice was easy for me. Also, duck hunting is more social and he doesn't have to be still and quiet the whole time.

Either one is fine. Just dont rush it or expect too much. Plan it when you can go and not get frustrated if he wants to leave early or if yall dont kill anything. start talking to him about it early and you will be surprised what they retain. also, if you think at some point that he is very interested in both hunting and fishing, look into the lifetime liscence early - much cheaper! Enjoy those times - they go by real fast.

this is sound advice.
I tried to take mine duckhunting, but it wasn't so great. He has had duck calls since he was old enough to hold one, so he gets mad when he has to put it down.
Dove hunting is a good way to break em in as well, and they make great retrievers.

Mine came on duck hunts at 3.. .picked the days and times he would come...
brought him on deer hunts at 2..
oh yeah and ear protection....
some deer hunting has more action than some duck hunting...
cold wet duck hunts can be miserable for a kid
at least in a comfortable box they can move around.. watch dvds.... sleep

A guy at work hunts in a bow hunting only club. He said he's going to let me hunt a few times this year. It's 2000 acres and he said 10 guys hunt it. The lease is $500/y. Is that a reasonable price?

i'd say duck hunting. don't have to be as still or quiet while in a duck blind...deer stand isn't made for kids
