re: Best wood pellet grill for under $750?

They really are more like a wood fired oven than a smoker. You can't beat the convenience though. I use smoke tubes and I recently purchased a big kahuna cold smoke generator. The big kahuna is awesome, I can finally get the flavor I want.

I'll just have to learn to live with the fact that the smoke flavor I had hoped for simply aint happening and focus on the ease of use part.
I really like the reviews on the Pit Barrel Smoker.

I was eyeballing one of those a while back but never purchased one. I even considered building one, but never did.
I don't know anyone personally that has one, but the reviews sure seem to be great. Might look at this again when my Char Griller Akorn wears out.

Similar to Pit Barrel is the OK Joe Bronco. I was considering a pellet but didn't want to spend the money and didn't want to have to frick with failing electronics. Very easy to use and I don't have to adjust settings after you figure out where set valves for temp.

I have been looking into pellet grills but read reviews about the Masterbuilt charcoal gravity all weekend and now leaning toward that. My reasons, it gets to 700deg so no need for a sear box. You can put wood chunks in with the charcoal and get a better smoke flavor than pellets. I think I am going to get the larger one.
Yeah i'm leaning that way also. Have not seen the price on the big mastbuilt. Which i think the 560 would be about the right size for my family.

500 for the 560 and 800 for the 1050. Neighbor has the 560, it cooks great but it eats charcoal pretty hardcore, 1050 will likely be worse on charcoal. He goes through a lot, so it doesn't really get rid of the babysitting. I am kinda questioning how long it will last too, 1050 is supposed to be higher quality. The app is shite, but it apparently works better with the 1050.

I have one as well. I've cooked all sorts of shite on it the past few weeks. It does not use a lot of charcoal in my opinion. I've done low and slow at 225, chicken at 325, pizza at 550, and steaks at 700. I'm still on my first 2 bags of charcoal after at least 8-10 cooks.

Not sure, seems to be a pretty common complaint from him and online when comparing their old setups and how much they use now.

Does the charcoal eventually go out after you're done or does it continue to burn?

I found them this weekend online at a place in Atlanta that has free shipping. Its around $800. I read hundreds of reviews and what some call using a lot of charcoal isn't really a lot.

I went from an offset and Pit Barrel cooker that both used a lot more charcoal.
There are 2 baffles that I slide in as soon as I'm done cooking and it shuts the fire down.

I have a Traeger. Use it almost every weekend. I love it. Very easy to use. Don't have to constantly monitor and the food is good. Couldn't be happier.

I'm seriously looking at that Masterbuilt 560. Reviews are consistently great. I've been told by some folks that live near the ocean there might be some longevity issues (i.e. rust from salt air) as it's not the thickest construction in the world. But I live in Tennessee, and if you keep it covered, should be good for a number of years. Certainly not the highest of end smoker/cookers if that's what one wanted.

The Perfect Grill, I will never go back to a pellet grill ever, it acts like one, but has charcoal, that's all you need, plus can use chuck wood to smoke? DONE!!

Even covered in Tennessee, that's where I am as well, longevity is looking to be an issue for me at least with high use. Some of the mods I've been looking at on the 1050 is to strengthen the smoke box with stainless steel and the 560 is even worse in that aspect. My neighbors is looking pretty rough already, he keeps it covered outside and smokes almost weekly. He's only had it for a few months. I would be scared of the 560 lasting more than a season or two if you are a high use smoker based on what I have seen. Very cool idea, 1050 seems to address a lot of the concerns people have for the 560. 1050 needs a few mods on it too though.

Some great feedback. I'd heard similar. Thanks!

My biggest disappointment by FAR is the fact that the pellet grill doesn't produce the smoke flavor I expected it would.
I would agree with this. Most pellet grills are so efficient at burning wood the they are not really consuming a lot of wood so there is less smoke. A Weber kettle is probably going to add a lot more smoke flavor than a pellet grill.
Having said that they still do an awesome job of smoking meat and they are super easy to use just because of the temp. control. There have been multiple contests won with pellet smokers so they will cook good meat.
I have a MAC 2 Star General and I just bought my 3rd pallet of pellets. There is 2000 lbs on a pallet. So they are plenty durable.
This is my first pallet of BBQr’s delight so we will see how they do. I think they are a 70/30 oak hickory. Supposed to be one of the top brands I took a chance in them.

I transitioned from traeger to Green Mountain. I had to baby the traeger just to finish a cook and their customer service is probably worse then places like ATT. The GMG just runs and never messes up. Add a smoke tube to beginning of cooks for more smoke flavor or experiment with different pellets.

For the price they should be though. That pellet is over triple the price of what the OP wants. That should last decades for 3k.

I was going to mention that masterbuilt. That thing looks interesting.
