I got a Gamo .177 earlier this year and that bastard is LOUD. I shot it once to test the scope and waited for the police to arrive it was so loud. They never did, but I won’t shoot in the neighborhood because it’s crazy loud.

You need to get that pellet under the speed of sound ~1100fps.

I'd look for a soliD Nitro Piston .22 or .25 caliber in the 900fps range

This is a wide arse net you're casting.

You can spend between $100 for a break barrel to a few thousand for a PCP system.

Heavier pellet should slow it down enough.

Are the better snap barrels quieter? I have a $150 Gamo snap barrel and it’s loud. Not loud like worried about it sounding like a gun but loud as in my neighbors can definitely know what I’m doing if they cared. I’m not talking about the sound of the bullet but the sound of the spring or whatever mechanisms that push the bullet?

I’m assuming the compressed air guns are quiet like a suppressed .22 right? I’d be willing to spend to get something like that.

No appreciably. About the only way for quiet is PCP, and I do not want to fool with those.

That’s what I’m assuming, it’s literally the sound of a loud spring releasing. Didn’t think there was a method to quiet that.

The PCP rifles are good if you want quick follow up shots. The gas rams are great if you want consistent groupings. As moose stated, stay under the speed of sound and use a heavier pellet.

If you go gas ram, be sure to use a beefy scope or on rated for air rifles. They will break a cheap scope. Springers and gas rams cause all kinds of hell on scopes, but there are scopes rated for the forces they encounter. I’ve used shotgun slug scopes on them as well.

A .22 rifle with CB caps will put more energy into a target down range than a pellet will. So if you can, a .22 rifle is the better option as air rifles get expensive quickly. If where you are shooting absolutely doesn’t allow a regular .22, then they become practical. It’s a crazy little community. I use to hunt with my hw90, damn thing weighs too much but I still use it in sensitive areas.

I will never understand why .22s come up in air gun threads.

Well I should’ve said, an air rifle doesn’t sound like a gunshot and won’t have the cops showing up. Even if it’s loud it’s not a gunshot sound.

Because air guns are usually .177, .22, or .25 and shooting around 900fps are very similar to .22.

It’s also a comparable weapon as far as cost to shoot.

I purchased a break barrel, Gamo Swarm xxx for my father as a Chrismas present. He likes it, but it is a little loud. He takes out squirrels at his house. Very accurate with a 10 shot mag in .22 cal.

I personally own 2 different Benjamin air rifles.

Benjamin Marauder Pistol in .22, that I converted into a rifle for more stability. It is a PCP air gun. I added a suppressor and you can shoot this gun anywhere. It is incredibly quiet. Mouse farting into cotton quiet. This is a 8 magazine bolt action - shoots around 850fps.

Benjamin Trail Nitro Piston.
This is a break barrel in .22 caliber. This is the quietest break barrel I have ever heard. Very quiet gun in comparison to most off the shelf air rifles, but in comparison to my Marauder, it sounds like a shotgun. This gun is very accurate and fire at almost 1200fps. Pellets easily shoot through squirrels at this power, so be careful with your shot background.

Recently had squirrels get into my attic and had to declare war. I have taken out 31 squirrels in my backyard in recent months. Happy hunting.

Because a .22 completely dominates a pellet rifle in every category except when firearms are not allowed. I say that as someone who owns a pellet rifle with $1100 in it. They just aren't economical when a $200 .22 could do the same job.

Are there still 800 fps .177 pelet guns out there? When I was a kid I think mine was about 750 and it killed squirrels well without sounding like a rifle.

I have a gamo shotgun for pests. Damn fun thing to own.

That doesn't help me. It's just mind bogglingly dumb to do so. Wait, not dumb, ignorant.

JR and I are about to declare war on the tree rats along my fence line. I do live in a residential neighborhood. What are my quiet options without spending too much?

I do not know how to search the various venders for quietness, but for real quiet, you'll probably have to go PCP. That brings in a charging issue. One getting fantastic reviews for the price is the Air Venturi Avenger

That guy knows his shot and has shot more guns than basically anyone. The consistency he got from the regulator was really impressive.

I have two 177 PCPs I've tuned down to shoot around 800fps. Perfect for squirrel and birds or even a timber rattler with a well placed head shot.

Since I bought my first PCP I never shoot my break barrel or multi pumps unless it's just to shoot them. PCP is more accurate. Much quieter. And much easier to shoot. Pumping a PCP is really a non-issue. The effort per shot is way more on a springer than a PCP using a hand pump. I spend 3-4 minutes pumping up the rifle inside my house. I can go outside and take 30 shots with my pistol or 60-70 shots with my rifle. Follow up shots are just pulling the bolt back and and charging the weapon from it's 10 round rotary magazine. I can leave the PCP tank charged and it's ready to shoot whenever I want. Not sure why anyone would bother with a springer if they can afford a PCP.

My latest: Artemis PP750

I have to shoot CB caps from my 24" long barrel rifle with a suppressor to shoot as quietly as my Benjamin Fortitude shooting 8.4gr JSB 177's @ 800fps.
