Looking to get a rifle AId and possibly some barrel work as well as getting my dads old shotgun reblued.

I hear a lot about a place around laff but not sure which one it is. I see there is Acadian gunworks and the teche place. Any recommendations on either or another place in the state?

Over here you have Reulet Gun Works and Don Geraci.

Dont know if Geraci will work on the shotgun, but youll have to call him.

I havent used either, but know a few people with positive experiences with both.

Acadian GW is owned by Glenn (Flemm from SoG) and Ryan, good dudes that will take care of you. Located in the Scott Industrial area behind Don's. Bayou Teche Guns is in Arnaudville and owned by Mike Brazda, who I worked for in the early 90's while in college.

Don has built 10-12 custom rifles for me in the last 20 yrs. I'm very familiar with his work, as he's a perfectionist. Located in Independence, 5 min off I-55. I've never seen a shotgun in his shop as he builds custom hunting and bench rest competition rifles. I've heard good things about Reulet but have not seen his work.

Old school bluing is a dyeing art. Buffing machines, salt bluing tanks, chemicals are a PIA. Most people have their firearms cerakoted since it holds up 100x's better than factory bluing. Cerakote will also be cheaper than a re-blue job. If you're interested in having a custom rifle built, let me know. I'll gladly share my experience and knowledge. Helped a friend build this 20 VarTarg

As far as the shotgun it is a 1960 1100 Wingmaster, I am not getting that cerakoted, it's more of something you pass down the family than a hunting gun anymore.

As for rifles I will be in the market for another soon and have thought about going custom but most are out of my price range. The gun that I want is unfortunately made by a company that has had a lot of problems lately so I'm nervous about it and looking at other options.

Give or take what does a hunting rifle built by Don run?

After doing some quick research I will definitely be giving him a call.

Last time I checked Don was charging around $375 for a barrel chamber job, and $375 for a bedding job. You have to supply the action ($400 - $1500), stock ($250 - $1200), and barrel ($350 - $500). Trigger will run from $100 to $350. He can order the parts but that's more legwork for him. Mosts of the GS's I use prefer you buy the parts and send them to the smith. Turnaround time is from 3 weeks to 2 months depending on who I use. Big name GS's will quote you 9 months to 1 year lead time.

Most people new to the game are led to believe you need to budget $2500 ~ $3500 for a custom rifle. You can easily build one for 1/2 that price if you do some research and buy your parts separately. It will also shoot just as accurate if the shooter does his part. Ballpark prices below

$400 - used Rem 700 rifle, which will be for the "donor" action
$625 - send action to PacNor and they will true and lap your action.
Then fit, chamber, and crown a PN Super match grade stainless barrel onto your trued action. You choose the cartridge.
$125 - install a new Timney trigger (or $200 for a Jewell)
$225 - find a used, like new HS Precision stock
$75 - have stock skim bedded for accuracy
$1450 - and you have a custom rifle that looks like the ones below, and will shoot ragged hole groups.

If you start fluting the bolt , barrel, install custom bolt knob, DBM bottom metal, McMillan or Manners stock, cerakote rifle, carbon fiber barrel, etc... the price can easily inflate to over $4000

Well I will run down my predicament since Carson and Chris have posted in here as well and see what yall think.
So getting a rifle for hunting out west and long range shooting in general. Was thinking hard on a 30 Nosler but after doing research you I found you really dont get your moneys worth on that round until you start getting into the heavier bullet, 210g and up. The biggest thing I plan on hunting is elk so have decided to stick with the ole 300WM.

Now for the gun and I am sure I am going to catch a lot of flack for this. The gun I am thinking of getting is a Rem 700LR, it has a Bell&Carlson stock, 26" barrel and the Xmark trigger and can be had for around $700. However the problem is that its a Rem and we all know what that means. Now I have been researching the shite out of this and have found that the common issues with them are timing being off or the or issues with machining in the chamber needing to be polished. Usually this causes the gun to not eject properly after firing. Now the one good thing is that by all accounts Rem has been very good at taking the guns back and fixing them free of charge. Also they recently replaced the CEO and upper management and supposedly are refocusing on QC. So if I go this route I will drop a Timney trigger in, probably run a bore scope through the barrel to see if it needs a new one and then maybe bed it. All of this should put me in the $1200-$1500 range, cheaper than any custom builds that I have found.

Completely missed that, looks like I will be getting a rifle built, do you recall about how long the wait time is?

Depends on the GS, as different smiths will quote you different lead times. No clue on Don's turnaround time. PacNor is running 8 weeks for them to true your action and install a super match grade barrel. This is where you will have to do your homework and call a list of GS's to discuss your project. Inquire about cost, lead time, etc.. If you plan to buy your parts separately, I can provide you with contacts, websites, and places to buy everything.

Well I guess I should have said that I will build one if I have to. I will get the 700LR and drop the new trigger in and see what I have. If the barrel is rough and I decide to go with a new one does the action have to be trued to get the accuracy out of it or will just screwing on a new barrel work? The LR stock already has an aluminum bedding block as well.

I have talked to three guys with the LR, two got lucky and havent had any issues with their guns, and both have got .5"-.25" groups out of them. The third has had to send it off twice so far.

Real world pics for you to decide if you want the action trued. Price varies from $125 to $250 depending on the GS. My same friend who built the 20 VarTarg pictured above wanted a custom 6.5x47Lapua. Found a Rem 700 SPS Varmint rifle for the donor action. Sent the action and components to the GS. Pics were taken to detail the build.

Remington uses a thick grease, that acts like epoxy when they thread factory barrels onto actions. Because they're not 100% in spec, or trued, this is what they look like when removing a barrel from the action. I've seen a lot worse with horrible machine work.

GS will blueprint the action by squaring the receiver face, and single point cutting new threads.
All metal work is centered on the bore-axis since the action OD can be out of spec.

Barrel blank in lathe as threads are machined for a super precise fit. This helps ensure accuracy as there is no slop.

Well you've convinced me, guess I will have to do some shopping around on GS and guns to try and get the price down, ideally I would like to keep it to $1,200 or less which will probably be pretty tough to do. Instead of getting the 700 LR I may just shop around for a very cheap 700 and see if I can get a stock separately for cheaper than I can get the LR for.
