This is a hypothetical.

Say someone has about a dozen long guns, and a half dozen hand guns, and wanted to buy an affordable decently secure gun safe for them, mainly to keep the kid out of, what safe should they consider?

Tractor Supply has a 36 gun safe with 14g steel door, and a weight of 345lbs, empty, for $530 with tax .

I would think that this would be a good enough safe to hold the previously mentioned hypothetical number of guns, as well as some ammo for them, and deter the typical amateur thief. Would I be correct in this assumption?

Other suggestions around the same size (hypothetically limited in depth and width because of where the safe would be located) and price point?

I was looking at this exact same one.

It's going on sale next week for $300. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger in it.

Is it the best option? Probably not, but it's better than nothing.

Is that so? Interesting. That would hypothetically be a great deal!

Just buy a $200 gun cabinet instead of a safe. It's kept my kids out for the past 12 years.

I checked that one out in person and you can customize it a lot of different ways. I'd probably only have the top shelf in and stack as many rifles as I could in the slots. Also check out the rods that go down the barrel and connect to the top shelf with velcro. You can essentially stack them in the middle of the safe.

A guy at work said he has the larger one like this and he loves it. Seems like a damn good deal at $500, and even better at $300.

Have to agree with this. If that's all you're worried about, you can get a gun cabinet for even ~$100. That's what I use with no illusion that it would stop a burglar/fire.

I've got zero experience with this safe and know nothing about it but I saw it in an email at 50% off @$399.

That's not ALL I'm worried about, but its my priority. I already have a cheap thin metal "safe", but I want something heavier, and that could hold up a little in a fire and take someone more than a drill and tin snips to get into. Also, my other one isn't tall enough to fit shotguns in. Hypothetically.

That one is shorter and lighter than the one I'm considering. That one is 53in tall interior height, this one is 55.5in tall interior height, and weighs like 60lbs more. This one is also a little wider

Very good thread started. I was about to go buy that safe from Tractor Supply because it was $50 off and seemed reasonably priced for my needs. I plan on hiding it in a wall within a closet. If it's going on sale 50% off, I'll buy two and hide them around the house.

An average safe out of view is better than a better safe in plain view.

I was looking at that same one because it will go on sale next week for black friday. However, the exterior width is too wide for where i need to put it. Looks like I'll end up with that Winchester 26 gun safe from tractor supply instead.

We are about to start working on the interior of my house (50% gutted due to hurricane Laura) and we will be building a little nook around this one. It will be pretty well hidden.

The best deals in that price range are usually at Costco. They run their Cannon safes on sale usually once a quarter and you can't beat quality in that price range. Unfortunately they don't have many on their website right now, that is how costco operates though, one day they have a bunch, next day nothing.

I just got the Liberty Revere 30 gun from Tractor supply for 599. I like it so far. Seems like the specs are about the same as what you were looking at. It seems a little top heavy but if you bolt it down it should be fine.

I'd go a step further if you haven't already and use a fireproof wall board for the nook around it, can't hurt I'd think

Gun safes hold about half they number of guns they advertise, they don't account for scopes.
