Drives me up a wall how often people misspell that and "Sheburn" or "Sherbun".

I mean, there's some argument for Sherburne, but come on...you named the 2 WMAs hit harder by flooding in the last decade than just about any other. I think the timber harvesting they have been doing on Sherburne is going to help in the long run.
Regardless, privatizing public lands is the WORST frickin idea, unless you can figure out a way to keep them open to the public and have wildlife as a priority.

Why, there is clauses that can be put in so that it is never sold or developed. If the company wants to get rid of it then it goes back to the state.
The old Jackson/Bienville WMA has areas being developed as we type this

Had some friends in from North Carolina hunting this weekend. They hunt strictly public land and have hunted 7 states this year already.
They said the WMAs in Louisiana are the worst maintained of any state they have been in by far.

Was always timber company land. It was leased from them just like Bens Creek WMA and Georgia Pacific in Morehouse. All gone now

JB, Ben's Creek, and GP are prime reasons why I'm afraid that Clear Creek will be lost one day. I don't hunt there much anymore, but that's where I started out and it's a special place to me.
Hell, I wonder how many people realize Thistlethwaite is private land leased to the state. Just imagine how much that would hurt to lose. Sherburne would be royally screwed then with the added pressure it would get.

Hearing rumblings of this now.
Horn porn created this. The state can’t come close to the money they can get for leasing it out

Rumor is state had a chance back in the 70s to buy it all for $50,000, JB, 32,000 acres. I really enjoyed hunting out there, even fishing the ponds and picking berries with the kids, sucks it’s all gone.

Damn you, Ron. Why you gotta bring that bad news in here?

This is most likely more of a money and staffing Issue. Some states have voted in different taxes and sources of revenue to support there public hunting areas. I believe Arkansas and Missouri did something along these lines.
We have a ton of Industry here in Louisiana. I know for some reason or another some of these company’s have to set land aside for mitigation. I wonder if they could work out a way to get some of the mitigation done on our public areas to improve habitat. I’m sure there are some federal stipulations that prevent this. lol
I would even support raising the WMA permit if it was earmarked for Improvements only.
The biggest thing I see most WMA’s need is better timber management and less gun days one some areas.

Louisiana earmarks money and then moves it.
That is what is wrong with this state. We don’t spend our funds with integrity.
This the results are worst in everything

Well that's an easy fix--don't cross pipelines...lol!
Lol I normally stay in the woods all day for when folks start bumping deer in and out. Had to get my brother out of a bind and left the woods at about 3 pm. Had a 2 mile walk out and felt like I was in nam.

But if they did as he proposed and increased the WMA permit cost, they couldn't use that for anything else. Unless there is some loophole when it comes to it being called a "permit", all funds generated from the sell of licenses has to be used for specific purposes in order for a state to qualify for Pittman-Robertson funds. If they move those funds anywhere else, they are not eligible for PR, which--in combination with Dingle-Johnson (best name ever for legislation...lol)--generates over a billion dollars annually for fish and wildlife projects nationwide.
That's not a pie I'd want to lose my slice of.

All wma permits and license fees etc should go strictly to maintaining and improving our public lands.

J-B was never state-owned property, only leased from Willamette and later Weyerhaeuser. Some WMAs are state owned some ain’t. SI Hills and Boeuf were donated by International Paper Co in the 1960s. Etc and so forth.
Soda Lake is leased, Bodcau is partially leased/partially state owned. Ownership info used to be included on the WMA maps.

I think he was referring to accessing remote parts of the WMA via Loggy Bayou. There won’t be much water unless we’ve had a lot of rain. Or that’s been my experience the couple of times I’ve been on it years ago. I’ve also only been on the west side of the WMA, never on the eastern side.

Boeuf is a very good WMA. I hunt it regularly, killing a deer is pretty easy out there with minimal effort. Like any place you get out what you put in. The state’s handling of WMA’s in this state is a straight joke. We are years behind compared to other states. It’s Louisiana,so it’s expected unfortunately.

Any info on Elm Hall off Lake Verret? I inherited a camp near there and would like to check it out at some point. Seems like a place that would hold plenty of pigs. Can you duck hunt this WMA?

Is the only boat launch on the WMA past the headquarters? That is the only one I see marked on the map.

I realize that, but the state had a chance back in the 70s to buy it dirt cheap and didn't.
