12 ga 00 Buck if it's thick.
45-70 lever action if you have some shots out to 100 yards but still have thickets.
Regular deer rifle if you have 200+ yard pipelines and logging roads.
Me personally, as someone else mentioned, I liked to get in a box stand away from the activity and keep an eye on the "back door" so to speak. A doe will run forever, a smart buck will double back and let the dogs keep chasing her and slip out behind you.

Out with the old in with the new!
People can run dogs as much as they want, when dog comes on my property is where the problem is. I don’t want unwanted dogs or people trampling over my property period.

To answer your question though an old Remington woods master 742 in 30-06 was a popular gun back in the day for running dogs

I carry mine with a 2 point sling across my chest tacticool style. I just find it sucks to carry long distances like that. There's no good way to carry it in the crook of your elbow or on your shoulder like a regular rifle.

Straight pull bolt gun in a .30-06, .35 whelen, or 9.3x62 shooting heavy for caliber bullets w/ a red dot. It's what the Europeans do. They are the driven hunt experts.
don't they use the straight pull bolts because their nanny states don't allow semi-auto and that's the fastest thing their overlords will allow?
Any excuse to buy a Blaser is a good one though.

Yes, I think they would use semi autos if they could.

Yeah, check with the guy that invited you. In our club we only use shotguns because we run small blocks of woods with beagles. Have a friend that runs 20,000 acres with walkers and they have all gone to AR’s with 30 round mags. He said when the deer is coming, they aim at the ditch on the opposite side the deer is coming from. When the deer hits the road, they shoot in the same spot as fast as possible and more times than not, the deer will run into the stream of bullets.

Good gracious that's asinine!
I grew up running deer with Walkers. If you can shoot, use an open sighted rifle or low power scope (or red dot, not an option 35 years ago).
If you can't shoot, or if its thick, roll with buckshot. I prefer #1.
If he's running you swing through and lead him a little, if he's really stretched, a little more. Follow through.
I've seen a pile of them rolled up with a 30-30 Winchester.
I don't know your friend, and maybe I swallowed the hook, but PLANNING to miss most of your shots and hoping to hit one is no way to hunt.

No hook here. I’m just sharing what he said they do. I have never and would never “hunt” like that.

This gun made me quit deer hunting. That has been 45 years ago and I still want to cuss when I think about that gun!

Yeah, they are fun as hell though. Not in the same way a semi is. I have a Blaser w/ a 6.5 creed barrel and a 9.3x62 barrel. I find every excuse to shoot it. It is so damn fun.

Sounds like the perfect time to buy an AR 6.5 Grendel
Use a 10 shot magazine.

I don’t want people on my lease, but most days I would love for a stray dog to run a deer. That’s good clean fun and a heck of a lot more high percentage than waiting for a buck to present a shot in the daylight.
